| --- 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 19, 1988 Three firsts for Gary Goodridge during Festival Days Cream of the crop at Arm Wrestling event The Third Annual Festival Days Arm wrestling competition attracted some of the best in the business, including several current world champs. The event attracted 85 compet- itors in six weight categories and a womens open division. Through the long afternoon, more than a few gallons of sweat were lost from the oppressive heat in the Festival Days tent and from the strain of competing in this gruelling test of strength and skill. As expected, 22-year old Gary Goodridge of Barrie, Ontario went home with three championship trophies including the mens heav- yweight, mens left hand open and the overall competitor. Goodridge, a giant of a man is the current world champion, and he went through all his matches without a loss. From Rick Baarbe, ranked second in the world in the heavyweight class, gave it all he had against Goodridge in the championship, but still could not defeat him. Goodridge picked up $300 for his three first place finishes, not too bad for any afternoon's work. There was a total purse of $2000 (cash and trophies) with $100 first, $50 for second and $25 for third. The event was organized and hosted by the Port Perry Arm Wrestling Team, and Mike Haigh told the Star afterward he was de- lighted at the calibre of arm wres- tlers who attended this year.
