28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 19, 1988 Soccer Minis put on a fine fournament Mini soccer tournament held at the old lawn bowling green on Sat., July 16, was a big success. Despite the heat, these little players put on quite a display of soccer skills. Lake Scugog Lumber beat Ridge North Realty 4-0 in the opening game. Two goals each by Adam Moynes and Christopher Skerratt. The second game saw Sport- sland squeak by Canadian Tire 2-0. Goals by Dean Van Camp and Mike Kroshnable. In the third game the fans were treated to an exciting game with Rotary beating Ridge North 1-0 on a goal by Clay Cleyndert. Game 4 saw Canadian Tire beat Big ""V"' 2-0 on goals by Ashleigh- Ann Murphy and Stefan Senyk. Game 5 Lake Scugog Lumber beat Rotary 1-0 on a goal by Christopher Skerratt. This win put Lake Scugog Lumber into the final. Game 6 Sportsland came out flying and beat Big '"V" 7-1. Goals by Joey Drebit with 3 and Mike Kroshnable with 4. This win put Sportsland into the final. Big "'V" got their goal from Sarah Smith. The championship game was a match up of the two undefeated teams - Sportsland and Lake Scugog Lumber. At the end of regulation time the teams were tied 1-1. Sportsland goal by Mike Kroshnable and Adam Moynes scored for Lake Scugog Lumber. Due to the extreme heat it was decided to declare both teams as "Champs". Both teams received trophies presented by 'The Town Crier" and "The Beefeater". Special thanks to Matt Coyne, Mark Cosway and Jerry Blackburn who handled the refereeing duties for all the games. : Scugog Youth Soccer Club would also like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for the trophies, Scugog Township for the use of the old lawn bowling green and most of all the parents who supported this tournament in large numbers. See you next year! A close game On Tues., July 5th, Lifestyle 2000 team from Greenbank played a good game against Nor- ton's Home Improvement who defeated Greenbank 13-12. The game started out with Nor- tons team only having 6 players so Greenbank sent over 3 of their players to make a game for all. Greg Phayre had a nice home run for Greenbank. Matt Blowe and Travis MacSween hit 4 for 4. Dana Hooker played a good defensive game, especially in the 3rd inning when she snagged a line drive while playing 3rd base. Jeremy Gibson, Matt Blowe and Trevor MacSween did a great job pitching for their first attempt in this position, since this was the first game that coaches were not pitching. Then on Tues., July 12th, Lifestyle 2000 Greenbank team hosted a game against Valu-Mart winning 15-8. Again Greenbank sent over 3 players to make a game. Trevor MacSween and Heather Tredway did a great job pitching. Greenbank got 9 of their 12 runs through walks. Jay Fletcher and Blair Howell had strong hits for Greenbank. Michael Phoenix played a good defensive game and coaches for Greenbank couldn't help but notice Ronnie from the Valu-Mart team playing a great game' no matter what position he played. Seven straight wins The Greenbank Mites led by Kevin Edwards' two homeruns extended their unbeaten streak to seven games last Monday versus Marlin Travel. Great fielding by Ryan McBride, Ryan McQuade, Tom Keeble, Andrew Donnelly and Jimmy Edwards contibuted to the win. Special praise goes to Daniel Petronijevic who hit his first homerun. Marlin Travel came on strong in the last two innings and player Murphy deserves honourable mention for his fine fielding and hitting. Thanks for a good game. The youngsters put on an entertaining show in the searing heat. The Second Annual slow pitch tournament hosted by Port Perry Ringette Association attracted 16 teams over the Festival Days Weekend. Jackie Little presented prizes to reps from the teams In the championship and consolation finals. From left is Dennis McWhirter of the champion Whitby Old Timers, Ron Zaparanulk of Scarborough Shooters Den, runner-up. At right Is Dave Bellan, representing Darlington, the consolation champs, and runner up Brian Locker of Doug and Slugs. Bellan won a bat from Sportsiland as MVP In the consolation, while McWhirter won a glove from Pineridge as MVP In the championship game. The Whitby squad took home $400 for finishing first In this tournament.
