PORT PERRY STAR -- Toesday/ August 3, 1988 -- 21 Performs magic Like most people, Steve Hep- burn saw his first magic show at a very young age, and was spell- bound. Today, at age 24, he's still spellbound by magic, but now he's the one making kids laugh with delight when the rabbit dis- appears. The Port Perry resident, who works at General Motors is known as Steve the Magician, and for the past year or so, he's been entertaining kids of all ages at par- ties and get-togethers. fascinates me, but the biggest part is seeing the smiles on the faces. People of all ages really love magic," he told the Star recently. It's one thing to have a fasci- nation with magic, it's something else again to actually become a magician. Initially, he went out and bought some books on magic tricks and tried to learn from the text, without too much success. "I love to perform magic. It' A little over a year ago, von the Wizard Campbell, a*magician from Oshawa, showed Steve some of the basic magic tricks, and that helped to get him going. Working with cards, coins, small sponge balls, Steve was soon practising every day to per- fect these tricks and he now has about three dozen in his repetoire. He also gets together each month with a group of fellow ma- gicians in a club called Ring 220 to swap stories and magic tricks. He told the Star that a magi- cian needs several things to be successful: dexterity with hands and fingers, a willingness to prac- tise long hours, patience and a touch of showmanship when per- forming in front of a group of ple. Most magicians perform in a tux. Not Steve. He prefers to work in a casual sports shirt with short sleeves, so people can't ac- cuse him of having something . tucked up his sleeve. His wife Sharron works as his assistant, as does Colleen Yorke. Steve charges $50 for a half hour show, and his dream is to be able to someday do nothing but magic for a living. Not surprisingly, he loves to attend magic shows to watch other magicians at work, and he wouldn't miss a David Copperfield special on teleyision. Ycs, he knows how Copperfield creates those spectacular illusions. When asked to explain, Steve, like all magicians, broke into a big smile and shook his head. They don't like to reveal the tricks of their trade. ._a_--G irri. ie A Information about Free'Trade Of particular interest to people who live in Ontario details of how this Agreement will affect: Canada's Parliament and the United States Congress are currently considering the Canada--U.S. Free Trade Agreement.
