Biologists worry as pike found in lake There have been persistent reports of finding northern pike in Canal Lake in Victoria County. This is cause for concern since northern pike have not been found in the Kawartha Lakes. Biologists believe one of the reasons the Kawartha Lakes maintain ex- cellent muskellunge pepulations is because there are no pike. When pike invade new waters they can seriously affect existing fish stocks, particularly muskellunge. In April, Ministry of Natural Resources staff conducted a net- ting study on Canal Lake and con- firmed that pike were well established. Immediately, netting was shifted to Mitchell Lake, the next lake upstream, to determine if pike had invaded it as well. The Kirkfield Liftlock presents a for- midable but not impossible bar- rier to the movement of pike from Canal to Mitchell Lake. The net- ting in Mitchell Lake did not catch any pike. Although a good sign, this cannot be considered con- clusive and further studies on Mit- chell are planned. Anyone catching a northern pike from Mitchell or Balsam Lake should keep it and notify the Ministry of Natural Resources in Lindsay at (705) 324-6121 or Zenith 73000. Pike or any other species should never be released into another body of water. This is il- legal and could have serious negative results on existing fish stocks. The Ministry of Natural Resources wants to prevent the further spread of northern pike in the Kawartha Lakes. If pike reach Mitchell Lake, they will be at the top of the Kawartha Lakes chain and could invade the downstream lakes quickly. Streak at 10 Despite having only a seven player roster due to vacations, the Seagrave Park Squirts ran their record to 10-0 with a 14-9 win over Greenbank Sponcor Feeds Tues- day night. Kent Taylor provided most of the offensive spark as he totalled 8 RBI's, including a pair of three- run homers. Chad Kearns ran his season strikeout totals to 55, fanning 7 in the first three innings. The Green- bank hitters did break Chad's season hitless string, picking up 3 hits in a 4 run fourth inning. Brandon Puckrin contributed to both defense and offense, as he pitched the final inning allowing 1 run; and also chipped in with a triple. He also assisted on two inning-ending outs by Ryan Williams which were instrumen- tal in the Seagrave victory.
