Muppet alive and well after 30 ft. tumble into well Muppet, a nearly blind senior citizen of a poodle, is alive and well and doing famously after a terrifying fall down a Port Perry well, and a valiant rescue by Scu- gog Hall No. 1 Fire Captain Charlie Lown. The little black dog tumbled down a 30 foot well last Thursday August 12, at approximately 2 p.m. Cliff Vaughan of 51 Simcoe Street North had uncovered the old well, which was buried under his patio by a wooden cover, dirt, and the Vaughan patio. Mr. Vaughan said he was work- ing on the patio and had the top of the well removed. He was actually in the process of back-filling the well when his parents, Cliff and Racheal Vaughan, dropped by for an impromptu visit. Naturally, Cliff Sr. brought along his dog, Muppet. Cliff Jr. warned his Dad about the hole, worried that the blind dog would fall in. But sometime during the visit, the dog somehow got into the backyard. Father and son noticed Muppet's absence, and began searching for him. Almost immediately, they looked into the backyard and saw Muppet poised next to the well. Cliff Sr. said, "There's Mup- pet!" and the words were no soon- er out of his mouth, then the poodle took a step forward and plunged down into the well. At first, the family was scared Muppet might have hit something 'hard and been seriously hurt, but when they fearfully looked down the hole, they saw Muppet swim- ming valiantly in about 10 feet of water at the bottom. Cliff Jr. nabbed a neighbour's ladder, but it wasn't long enough, so his daughter, Kristen, called Port Perry's Fire Department, Scugog Hall No. 2. Captain Charlie Lown wasn't sure, when the call was received, Victher a child or a dog had fal- en. Motel theft Durham Regional Police were called to the Railroadhouse Motel Friday moming August 12, to in- vestigate the theft of six parking curbstones and two wooden chairs. The items were apparently sto- len sometime during the night. EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST.. PORT PERRY, ONT. "It was a young girl on the phone," he recalled. "And she was frantic." When fire trucks arrived, howev- er, Captain Lown realized it wasn't a child down the well--just Muppet, still swimming, but weakening fast in the icey cold water. Without further adieu, he rap- pelled down a rope into the well. Another firefighter threw down a bag, which Captain Lown put Muppet into, and a second rope was used to pull the bag with Muppet in it, up to dry land again. Muppet was taken immediately to a veterinarian, and aside from being cold, the little poodle was unharmed. "The dog's fine!" Cliff Jr. told the Star exuberantly. "He's great." Looking back on the day, he added, "It was sort of an exciting twist to an otherwise dull day!"
