26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 30 1988 AY CN The Kinsmen Club of Port Perry held their first annual golf Tournament at Sunnybrae Golf Course last week and although they did not have a large turn- out, they were able to raise some money for Cystic Fibrosis. Knocking off Peterborough The Greenbank Gamblers have advanced to the Ontario In- termediate Open Championships with an extra-inning victory over . Peterborough last Monday night in Greenbank Park. This game promised to be a close one right from the start with Greenbank's Mark Goreski opposing Peter- borough's Randy Fife. Peterborough jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first inning on a two-run home run by John Har- rison, before many of the large crowd had found their seats. However, in the bottom of the first Terry Till led off with a single and scored on a George Redshaw hit to close the gap to 2-1. The Gamblers tied it in the third as Greg Rodd led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Terry Till and scored on a two-out single by Brian Till. This brought on Brian Condon - in relief of Randy Fife, and Con- don and Goreski then battled it -out in an excellent pitchers duel for six innings. In the bottom of the ninth however, Brian Till led off with an infield hit. George Redshaw then advanced him to second with a long fly ball out. This brought Rodd Real to the plate with one out, and Real pro- mptly drilled a line drive into the left centre fence to score Till and send the Gamblers on their way to London for the OASA championships. The intermediate open cham- pionships will be a double- knockout tournament format in London on September 10-11 weekend. Teams confirmed at the tournament are Sarnia, Grimsby, Toronto Champion Sportswear, South Porcupine, London, Acton, Smithville and Greenbank. Mark Goreski allowed only four Peterborough hits in the game while striking out five. Condon and Fife combined to allow seven Greenbank hits and six strikeouts. Brian Till and George Redshaw each had 2 hits, while Greg Rodd, Rodd Real and Terry Till had one hit each. At the CNE Bulova Watch Tour- nament, the Gamblers were eliminated in the semi-final game on Saturday night by Etobicoke. The final score in this game was 2-1 as the Gamblers were only able to muster 3 hits in support of Wayne Wells. Wells allowed 3 hits while striking out nine. As a final tune-up for the OASA tournament, the Gamblers will be in Fenelon Falls on the Labour Day weekend for the annual tour- nament. First game is Saturday at B a.m. at the Bobcaygeon Ball ark. The Port Perry Legion (Branch 419) Squirts have ad- vanced to the all-Ontario OASA tournament, thanks to two straight victories over Campbell- ford. The OASA championship tournament will be held in Harris- ton in September. In the best two out of three series against Campbellford, the Legion Squirts won the first game 22-19 in a real shoot-out. The Squirts played much better defense ny game two to win by a score of 13-5. In game one, the Squirts jumped into an early lead 7-2 after the first inning. but by the end of six they were down 18-14. A remarkable rally and hitting spree in their last at bats produced eight runs for the Squirts, and then they held Campbellford to just one run in the bottom of the 7th for the 22-19 win. On the mound, Billy Zapara- nuik pitched five innings and al- lowed 12 hits. Ricky Olaisen Legion Squirts advance in OASA went the rest of the way and gave up three hits. In game two played in Port Perry, the Squirts responded to the home diamond advantage for a sol- id 13-5 victory and a berth in the championship C tournament Sep- tember 3 and 4. Port Perry jumped into an ear- ly lead, bat Campbellford came back in the fifth to tie the game 5- 5. The big hit for Port Perry came in the bottom of the 5th with the bases loaded when Scott Heasman ripped a shot to left field that cleared the bases for a grand slam. That led to an eight run up- rising in the 5th and cemented the victory for Port Perry. Scott also contributed a single with his grand slam, while Craig Laird had four singles and Davey Bourgeois rapped two doubles and a single to help the cause. : Billy Zaparanuik and Ricky Olaisen combined to limit the vis- itors to just six hits with their strong pitching performance.
