RR al 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 30 1988 The Mackie's Transport Mos- quito Soccer Team missed taking the Durham Soccer Association's league champions cup by the closest of margins. By virtue of their top placing in the Ux- bridge/Port Perry/Stouffville league the Port Perry team was asked to compete with other league-leading teams in a tourna- ment at Whitby last weekend. Saturday's game against Pickering was a hard fought af- fair with both teams trying hard. Port's Matt Cameron with a high left footed drive and Daryl Bourgeois on a deflection put us through to the Sunday's games. The other semi-finalist withdrew and Port found themselves in the final against the best Mosquito team in Whitby. Eventually a Whit- by player handled the ball on the goal line and Sandy Mark scored from the spot. The Port defense were really stretched as Chris Needham, Neil Hancock and Adam Ross battled to keep Whit- by at bay. Eventually they scrambled in an equalizer follow- ing a free kick. Full time came with both teams tied 1-1 and two 10 minute periods followed. Small guys like Darren Kinnunen and Max Gallagher found other stores of energy and at times pinned Whitby in their half of the field. The game was still a draw and each team were given 5 penalty shots to break the tie. Steve Gilbert had been absolute- ly splendid diving around in the mud. Even with one score and two shots off the crossbar, Port had to succumb to three hard drives that Steve just could not reach. However, none of the Port kids Strong showing by Mosquito soccer squad were ashamed of losing and pro- udly accepted their runner-up trophies. All of Thursday's games - the last of the season - will be at Ux- bridge with an early 6:30 p.m. 'kickoff. Come and support the Port Perry Mosquitos.
