The house in question at 324 Queen Street is immediately west of the Masonic Lodge. The application to re-zone from residential to commercial was submitted by Roger Moase, a Port Perry accountant, who plans to use the main floor for his offic- ~ es and convert the upper floor to a single apartment. Letters of opposition to the re-zoning from four persons living nearby were filed with Township council at a public meeting held Monday afternoon into the re- zoning application. The letters ob- ject to commercial infringement into a residential zone, and one points out that there is already a parking problem on Queen Street. Strong objections were voiced at the public hearing by Mr. and Mrs. David Stewart who live in a large century home on Lilla Street, immediately south of the parking lot that serves the Mason- ic Lodge and Town Hall 1873. Mrs. Stewart told council she is opposed to turning homes of historical value into commercial offices, and she expressed concem Last long weekend of summer is here As Monday, September 5 is the annual Labour Day holiday, the Port Perry Star will be pub- lished a day later than usual next week. Three days of interesting sights, sounds and events for the whole family, starting Saturday and winding up on Monday. We'll see you at the Fairgrounds at Sim- coe Street and Regional Road 8. And don't forget that for thou- sands of youngsters and teens in Scugog, it's back to school next week. Please take special care while driving and watch for the flashing red lights on the school buses. Have a good holiday weekend and enjoy yourse'f at the Port Per- ry Fair. Re-zoning for accountant office runs into objections about the parking area to the rear of the property. Lawyer Michael Fowler, act- ing for Mr. Moase, told council that the property in question has space for nine parking spaces, and his client would like to open u the rear yard to share parking facil- ities with the lot serving the Ma- sonic Lodge and Town Hall 1873, if possible. Mr. Fowler said the use of the house for a professional account- ing office is not "an offensive one," and he said his client plans no changes to the exterior of the house. His client he said, is will- ing to put up hedging and/or fenc- ing to act as a barrier between the property and those abutting. Township council listened to the arguments from Mr. Fowler and the concerns from Mr and Mrs. Stewart, but no vote on the matter was taken Monday after- noon. Ward 2 councillor Howard Hall, whose residence is immedi- ately west of the property in ques- tion, vacated his chair and took no part in the discussion on Monday.
