Of par- ticular interest to youth ages 8-16 1s the YMCA Shodokai Judo Club. Beginning its third season this twice-a-week program stresses Stamina, speed and power. Judo 1S a contest of skill and quickness. The YMCA will again be offer- Ing two levels of Judo - beginner and intermediate. The course is designed to improve the par- ticipants body awareness, fitness and self-control. There is testing for advanced belts by our highly- trained instructor, Duncan Vignale. Welcome all bowlers back for another season of bowling. - LEAGUE'S AVAILABLE - and has been on the provincial grading board for a number of years. The YMCA Club enters a number of competitions during the year with clubs from Bramp- ton, Ajax, Scarborough and last year 4 members competed in the USJA Jr. Championships in Buf- falo, New York. Also of interest to school-age children looking for fitness- related activities is Floor Hockey. This popular program is offered at both Blackstock and Port Perry. There are now 3 age levels -6to8 years, 9to 11 years, and 12 to 15 years. The Port Perry Juniors are the defending Durham Champions. Both boys and girls are encouraged to come MoJacks record for the year now stands at 26 wins, 1 tie and 10 loses, with only the league tourny left to play. Wrestling begins its 2nd season at the YMCA and is looking for- ward to a successful year. The YMCA Club features Olympic Free-Style Wrestling where the competitors use their whole bodies to wrestle. Members learn about individual effort, team spirit and personal fitness during this 2-hour class on Wednesday evenings. Wrestling is one of the most popular and fastest growing sports for young people in Canada and the YMCA is pleased to be able to offer it in Port Perry. Basic Horsemanship is again being offered for children ages 8 and up. This is a beginners pro- gram for young riders offered in conjunction with Northwood Equestrian Centre in Seagrave. First time riders will learn to con- trol their horses thru basic manoeuvres and acquire con- fidence and balance. Jazz Dance and Gymnastics complete are fitness-related ac- tivities for youth. Jazz mixes con- temporary music and choreography to help develop the participants sense of rhythm, physical fitness and self-control. A sign- up sheet is posted at the courts now and the deadline for signing up is September 14th. The draw will be posted September 16th. It's everyones responsibility to make arrangements with his or her op- ponent as to what times games can be played the following week. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, September 24th and the finals are to be played on the Sun- day. The Singles Tournament is always a popular event and en- joyed by all who enter it. Grab your racquet, get down to the courts, practice those skills, and get ready to grab the title of Ladies Singles Champ and Men's Singles Champ. Stay tuned to more information posted at the courts. On Thursday, September 1st, young people from Tennifarm and Lindsay Tennis Clubs visited Port Perry for round robin ladies' and men's doubles. The tourna- ment was organized and run by Sophia Brendon and Diane Burt. Representing Port Perry's Juniors were: Quinn Sutherland - and Melissa Moehring, playing in the under 16 age group. A lunch, consisting of various sandwiches, fruit trays, and cookies was supplied by mothers of our hard playing juniors. Again, Judy Vanderwyst made those ever delicious cookies, iced and decorated with tennis balls, racquets and the initials of all three clubs. Twenty-six juniors signed up for this Junior Kawartha League Doubles Tennis Tournament. Everyone had a great day of com- petition with exciting play in all age categories. A gallery of parents and friends of the players enjoyed the day as well. We are proud of our young tennis players and know they assure the Port Perry Tennis Club of a strong future! Congratulations to the members who comprised the Port Perry Kawartha Tennis League Team.
