Melinda graduated from University in 1960 and spent your viewing pleasure. Local ar- tists as well as some from other areas of Ontario will be presen- ting their art. There will be everything from paintings and drawings to pottery, leather and wooden sculptures, weaving, silks Melinda's baskets. The bookmarks with all the ex- hibit dates are available at Scugog Memorial Public Library. We'll be looking forward to see- ing you on Saturday, September 436-9888 10, 2-4 p.m. to meet Melinda several years involved in and glassworks, and of course, Mayhall research in the Arctic. Upon mov- Cc ing to Toronto in 1970 she began designing and making Eastern Arctic-style parkas. Throughout this period Melinda had collected some baskets and they had always been of interest to her. In 1983 when she saw that a workshop in basketry was being offered she jumped at the chance to satisfy her curiosity about the processes involved in making a basket. A short while later she was a full-time basketmaker par- ticipating in the major craft shows in Ontario. What is most alluring about basketry to Melinda is the varie- ty. You have a choice of techni- ques: coiling, twining, plaiting. You have a choice of traditional, functional styles or absolutely non-functional art pieces. Most especially, you have a choice of materials. Some can be purchas- ed, already prepared, and others such as grape vine, red osier or cattails, are gathered. The basketry of today also incor- porates many found objects such as telephone wire, plastic strap- ping, shells, bone, wool, etc. Most of Melinda's work tends to be non-traditional but they can usually function as containers. The material most commonly us- ed is purchased reed which she dyes. It is frequently used in con- junction with gathered vines and branches. Melinda has had exhibitions in galleries in Montreal, Toronto, Brampton and is looking forward to her show in Port Perry and an upcoming show in Ottawa. Melinda will be present at the -- RATES SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE -- library from 2 to 4 p.m. on Satur- day, September 10 and we invite you to come and meet her and en- joy her beautiful baskets.
