But after this, is the keen ex- citement for parents and their families as they start into a new year of learning and experiences, and being a first for many. Then groups of different ages plan their fall programs in church and com- munity organizations. The Scugog Pastoral Charge completed the summer with a week of Bible School that at- tracted 69 to 79 children. The workers were surely tired but happy by the weekend. I wonder if the parents realize how much time and effort goes into acquir- Ing materials, studying & plann- ing the week before it even starts. Then the care, love and teaching is given so patiently. Their reward is the response and hap- piness of the children. Perhaps a little more help next year would be appreciated. One of the first returns to autumn will be the meeting of the "Head'" U.C.W. at the home of Mrs. Clara Dowson on Wed. even- ing, Sept. 7. They will surely deal with final details for the first turkey supper of the season, Wed., Sept. 28. Bonnie Gerrow will take reservations for tickets for 5 or 6 p.m. So you'd better phone her early. Don't forget your donation for the food bank. On Tues., Sept. 13, 7 to 8 p.m. there will be registration at the Island Community Hall for Guides with Roddy Barnhardt as their leader, Brownies, Beavers with Jan Gerrow as their leader, and Cubs. Inthe Port Perry area, it seems that people are responding very well to the recycling project, but people are asked to fill their blue boxes before placing for collection & thus save time & work. I'm sure this makes us feel rather guilty when we realize the products we should also be saving. 'Many will remember the canoe- ing accident, 10 years ago, that took the lives of a number of students from St. John's School in Claremont. Mrs. Michele's son was one of those whose life was lost on that fateful outing. During the past ten years, she come to terms with, and triimphed over, her grief. Weare sorry to report that Bet- ty Ann Freeman lost another brother when Merle Jones passed away with a heart attack in the Lindsay Hospital a week ago. Merle will be well remembered by many Island people when he built a house at Gerrow's Beach where his family lived before moving to Lindsay and his son moved to New Zealand. Merle's wife predeceased him a few years ago. This week Betty Ann Freeman starts her 16th year of school bus driving. Many of the riders have grown up with her from kindergarten to their time of higher learning. This is a record, not many can claim. Her & Roy's son is off to his second year at the Guelph Agricultural College. Myrtle church begins Myrtle Church begins again on September 11 following the sum- mer recess. Our new minister, Mrs. Milnes will be in charge of the services. Margaret Stevens 'will lead the Sunday School and all children and their parents are invited to participate in Sunday morning services. Ten-thirty (10:30) is the time. Square dance classes begin again on September 16, Friday night. This is a beginner class and anyone is welcome to come. Register ahead by calling 655-4492 for details. Jerry, Jean and Janet Stachow enjoyed a trip to the west coast during the summer. They were celebrating Jerry's retirement from his teaching career and we all wish him well in his new status. FERGUSON - HENDERSON af 2 a On May 14th, 1988, Shelly Henderson and Alan Ferguson were united in marriage by the Rev. Dale Davis at the Blackstock United Church. The bride is the daughter of Larry and Mary Henderson of Port Perry. The groom is a son of William and Jean Ferguson of Blackstock. The beautiful evening ceremony was followed by a reception at the Oddfellows' Hall in Port Perry. The Master of Ceremonies was William Henderson, uncle of the bride. The couple spent their honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They now reside in Downsview, Ontario.
