me A Sa TR do THT my - CE om a Tia Woodcroft says she's ready for 'new challenge' The chairman of the Durham Region Seperate School Board will be stepping down at the end of this term to enter municipal politics at the local level in Scu- gog Township. Tia Woodcroft, who has been a trustee with the Seperate Board for eight years and chairman for the past term, told the Star last week she "is ready for a new chal- lenge." Mrs. Woodcroft, a resident of Prince Albert for seven years, will be seeking the Ward 1 (Reach) seat on Township council Novem- ber 14. She is the second candidate to officially declare for this seat. Greenbank resident Connie South- ern made her intentions known three weeks ago. Incumbent Ward 1 rep Yvonne Christie has already stated that she will be seeking the Township seat on the Durham Region council this election. Mrs. Woodcroft told the Star last week she feels her eight years experience in education as a trus- tee and Board chairman will be a benefit if she is elected to the ward seat. "I worked very hard (as a trus- tee) I took a caring interest in stu- dents and parents, and learned about the wise spending of tax dollars," she said. She had been thinking seri- ously of trying to enter local poli- 'tics for the past several months, and said her decision to officially jump into the race was largely in- 'fluenced by the fact that for the first time, Scugog, Brock and Ux- bridge will have their own rep on the Seperate School Board this coming term. "I worked very hard to bring 'this about. Had it not happened, I likely would have taken another term on the Board (representing the interest of Seperate School supporters from Uxbridge and Scugog) Mrs. Woodcroft said that rec- reation facilities for the Township will be a key issue in the up- coming election campaign. She would like to see such things as hiking and cycling trails (on a small scale) in Scugog. And she feels the feasibility study looking into the details of a second ice pad-squash courts and banget hall is a good step. I would be certainly willing to explore the idea of recreation fa- cilities and a new municipal build- ing under one roof," she said. And she said she feels the time has come for Scugog to hire a full-time recreation director. She said she is not opposed philosophically to the idea of long term debenturing by the Town- ship, if needed, to pay for new municipal facilities. Another issue she would like We Deliver The NEWS Keep yourself informed..... Read the Star weekly! to examine carefully is the exten- sion of municipal garbage collec- tion into Prince Albert, which in turn would allow that community to become part of the Durham Re- cycling "blue box" program. And she feels it is impera- tive that Scugog Township has a full time qualified by-law enforce- ment officer. Originally from the Belleville area, Mrs. Woodcroft lived in Oshawa for several years before moving to Prince Albert with her husband Paul. She taught at the elementary and secondary levels, and did some supply teaching in special ed, as well as tutoring autistic teen-agers at Scott's Place in Caesarea. Mrs. Woodcroft said she will be running a "people-oriented" campaign, knocking on as many doors as possible and listening to the concerns and the expectations of the voters in Ward 1. iS BACK-10.SCHOOL up 'Smartie' Contest Guess how many Smarties are in the Antique Candy Jar in our window?
