Summer is over, Nursing Home gearing up for Fall By Wendy Clark After enjoying a couple weeks of holidays I am now back into the swing of things. Over the week of August 15-19 we hosted many ac- tivities such as pricing, sing song, church - Greenbank U.C., euchre, baking, and treat wagon-freezies. On Wednesday, August 17th, we had our monthly birthday party which was hosted by the Blackstock Woman's Institute. Terrific entertainment was violin playing, poem readings, piano playing and a dog doing tricks. A special' thank you to this fine group for a wonderful afternoon of fun. The following day we had Pet Contest Winners our yearly yard sale. Several peo- ple grabbed up the great bargains on second-hand goods. Everyone "was pleased with the great tur- nout and good participation. The week of the 22-26th we were all busy with programs such as gardening, bowling, coffee hour, euchre, crafts, bingo and treat wagon - watermelon. On Tuesday, August 23rd, we held a housekeep- ing and laundry appreciation tea in honour of those girls that do these jobs. The staff certainly en- joyed the gifts and delicious cake. Several residents cleaned up their own rooms today to give the housekeepers a break. On the 25th was the supper Club. A feast was prepared consisting of BBQ steak, corn on the cob, fresh tomatoes and fresh peaches along with white wine. Into the third week we hosted a games day (wheel of fortune, bi- ble quiz), hymn sing, euchre, crafts, bingo, ice cream parlour and baking. Tuesday, August 30th we ended the month with a trip to the C.N.E. Several boy scouts assisted us in pushing wheel chairs. We journeyed throughout the International Building, Food Building and Horticulture Building. Although the day went by quite quickly we enjoyed ourselves immensley. Wednesday the 31st, we had a Kids Day. The children that came to visit us told us stories all about themselves. Have you ever noticed how elder- ly people's eyes sparkle brightly whenever children are around? Residents celebrating bir- thdays are Mr. Arthur Brock (6), Mrs. Isabel Burtis (8) and Mrs. Ivy Gould (13). Lets all wish them many happy returns. Best wishes to staff members Collen Kozak, Penny Heard, and Michele Andrews who will be celebrating their birthdays. The residents extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Clara Riseborough. Mrs. Riseborough's husband Jack has been a resident for a few months but now she also requires nursing care. We hope she enjoys living here. On behalf of the residents and staff we would like to send out our sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Ed Harris who passed away on Saturday, August 27th. Ed has certainly been with us for many years and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our new patio awning has been installed and the residents are very pleased. A special thank you to the Rotary Club for their generous donation. - Upcoming events are Spelling Bee (9), Trip to Cullen Gardens (12), Resident Council meeting (14), Pub Night - 7 p.m. - (14), and our overnight trip (19-20). Sometime in the very near future we will be having a major fun- draising program with proceeds to our upcoming overnight trip. The Donut Press (Water St.) has offered us a fundraising program which will cover a 24 hour work period. Keep an eye out for fur- ther details and support the residents for their overnight trip to Kingston.
