In an interview with the Star last week, Mr. Witteveen said he feels the number one major priori- ty the Township must tackle soon is construction of a new munici- pal building. "We (the Township) are going to have to do this sooner or later and it might as well be sooner," he stated, adding that he feels the location of the present building on Perry Street in Port Perry is the best location for a new office. Mr. Witteveen, who has lived in Cartwright since 1982, and be- fore that in Oshawa, has no previ- ous municipal experience, but says he plans to run an active, positive campaign, knocking on doors and inviting voters in the ward to contact him with their complaints and wishes. He said he believes there is a "silent majority" in Ward 4 who feel they have not been getting full value for their tax dollars when it comes to municipal ser- vices. He mentioned road mainte- nance as an example, especially in the Caesarea and View Lake areas. "This is what people are tell- ing me," he said. When asked his opinion on a new recreation facility, he said there may be a need, but the ques- tion is how to pay for it. Can we afford it? He said he feels that a new municipal office is a bigger priority at the present than big ticket recreation facilities. He's the son of Scugog's Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm, who has announced his retirement at the end of this term after close to 30 in local munici- pal politics. In an interview with the Star last week, he said it has been a "long term desire of mine to run for municipal office." And he felt that with his fa- ther retiring from politics, this is the year he would jump into the race. The only other officially de- clared candidate in Ward 4 is Ben- ny Witteveen. He and his wife Margaret have two grown daughters, Susan and Nan- cy. He has worked at General Mo- tors in Oshawa in the material handling and control department for 36 years. He said he is in support of the "continued expansion or improv- gement of recreational services in all areas of the Township through the various committees and groups where the need is the great- est." He would not be in favour of seeing the Township go into de- bentures long term to pay for mu- nicipal faciltities.
