18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 13, 1988 Good turnout at centre Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton There was a good turnout at the Community Centre last Sunday morning when the Church School met outside. We had a fun time together singing and playing games, and munching on sand- wiches and pop. We invite anyone to join with us each Sunday mor- ning at 10 a.m. for Church School. Classes for all ages. Morning wor- ship at 11:15 a.m. The Eleanor Knight Group met at the home of Florence Ashton last Wednesday evening with 10 ladies present. Vice-president Muriel Fisher chaired the meeting. Muriel opened the meeting by reading a poem titled "A Leader's Conversation with God" by Lois Powrie. Psalm 96 was read. Muriel's devotion was "To Declare the Unfailing Pas- sion of God". Plans for our fall thankoffering were dealt with. The date is Sunday evening, Oc- tober 2 at 7:30 p.m. when Miss Barbara Woodruff will be our guest speaker, and will give us a talk and slide presentation of her trip to U.S.S.R. Roy Death was in charge of the study, which con- tinued our study series on Russia. Refreshments were served by the hostess. It was nice to see such a good attendance at morning worship on Sunday morning. It appears that a lot of our people are back from vacation, and now ready to settle Jane Wild. into the busy routine of fall ac- tivities within Burns. Rev. McEn- tyre's sermon title was "Is Faith Hereditary?", his text from 2 Timothy, Chapter 1, verse 5. Scriptures were read by Debbie Batten & Theo Knight. We were also treated by a lovely solo from our minister, 'It's a Wonderful World". Next Sunday, Mr. McEn- tyres' subject will be "The Nerve of a Christian' in a continuing series on Christian Commitment. The September meeting of the Ladies' Bible Class will be held on Wednesday evening at the home of Joan Knight at 8 o'clock. Anyone interested in forming a couples' club, a Christian studies class, and a men's fellowship, you are asked to call Rev. McEntyre. The Kirk Guild have an ongoing commitment to support Denise House (formerly Auberge Shelter). A basket will be placed in the northex on the last Sunday of each month for your donations of towels, bedding, clothing and toiletries, or you may leave them in the church kitchen. Your help with this project is very much ap- preciated. For further informa- tion, please call Margaret Davis 655-4825. The ladies of St. Thomas' Anglican Church, Brooklin, invite the ladies of Burns to a dessert and coffee party on Mon., Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the church. And, there will be cash priz- es awarded to participants for "best display" and for "best apple pie". This is a perfect idea for any of our clubs who would like to take part.
