eT ---- A, T ---- says summer is all but over Nestleton-Caesarea News by Mabel Cawker Comment: We have had a long, dry spell in this area of Cart- wright, with water at an all time low, in the lake, ponds, wells, etc. It was a great relief to have the steady rainfall for a night or two...and what a pleasure to see the drastic change it brought about. BUT - there is a distinct chill in the air...which reminds us that summer days are about over. In fact! The trees, bushes, etc. are beginning to turn and a nip of frost is in the air these nights! With guests from Hampton and Maple Grove Branches present, the Nestleton Women's Institute meeting was held at the Nestleton Community Centre on Wed. after- noon. President Neta Fish, open- ed with a poem and a warm welcome to all. Following the Ode and Collect, the minutes were ap- proved as read by sec'y. Gwen Malcolm, and treasurer Rika Wygerde gave the financial state- ment. Two copies of the new revised Handbook have been pur- chased for use in the branch. The roll call "Why does Canada attract people from other lands?" was well answered. The Fall Con- vention to be held in the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Oct. 24th and 25th will be attended by delegate Rika Wygerde. The first reading of a resolution - "That School buses have orange caution flashing light before the red stop lights are activated' will be given a second reading. The Motto, "A Smile is a curv- ed line which sets a lot of things straight" was taken by Doris Not- tingham, Convener of Interna- tional Affairs..followed by a report of "Something Canada is doing in India'. A project called "Sleeping children around the World' distributes Bed-Kits through organizations such as Rotary Clubs who go to District schools in Bombay and Madras and give out a packaged bed-kit to needy children. Marion Lewis of Hampton, gave a poem composed by Doreen Perett, who was unable to be pre- sent. Mrs. W. Laird of Maple Grove played a medley of old favourite songs on the piano, which was most enjoyable. Introduced by Doris Not- tingham, the guest speaker Christine Gill, took the members on a journey to India with slides taken on a trip back to India, after living in Canada for 12 years. Many changes had taken place, but the teeming millions are there in Bombay and Calcutta, with snake-charmers and elephants for riding in the streets. Beautiful estates and ethereal architecture of temples made of white marble imported from Italy, make a sharp contrast. Horticulture is carried on using pots instead of flower beds...and flower shows cover an area of two football fields with enormous blooms of many popular flowers, dahlia, zinnia, cacti, poinsettias and col- eus 12 feet tall. Water is conserv- ed in reservoirs as the climate can be dry. Miles of white sand stretch along the beach with no one on it. Palm trees line the streets and also banyan trees sup- ported by aerial roots. Cows wander at will and are regarded as sacred. They saw the oldest Church.. and rose gardens and where tea is grown.. and orchids. Many pieces of India handwork were on display and they have to be seen to be appreciated. Also a display of snaps. The speaker was thanked by Gwen Malcolm and given a gift. Lunch of fruit loaves, cheese and grapes with a cup of tea .. and visiting .. concluded an in- teresting meeting. Hampton and Maple Grove each expressed ap- preciation to Nestleton for the pleasant afternoon. With guest speaker Rev. Ron Van Auken, Director of Research and Church Growth for the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the 143rd Anniversary of Nestleton Church was fittingly marked on Sunday, Sept. 11th.
