CT TE REE NET BRR. TR. TREE TR. TREE TN BRE NS TRE OR TE TER TR TTT I=.» 34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 13, 1988 New waterproof jacket Rick Saric and Carl Obemn were amazed that a very popular (not too mention trendy) jacket that is worn everywhere in their native England is not available on the Canadian market. So they decided to do some- thing about it. They contacted the British manufacturer of the jack- ets, set up a marketing company, and will soon be taking orders from Canadians. Mr. Ober, who has lived for the past several years east of Nestleton where he has a cabinet making business, and Mr. Saric, an old school chum who recently Sigralsd wo Canada, believe the Jacket will prove ular amon Canadians. Pop & Especially Canadians who spend a lot of time outdoors in cold, damp weather. The jacket, which comes in three-quarters or full length, is made from Egyptian cotton, is very lightweight (about two pounds) and completely coated on the outside with beeswax, the partners say it is "guaranteed wa- terproof."" Well, there are plenty of wa- terproof coats on the Canadian market these days, but the partners say the beauty of this jacket is the fact it is made from cotton. It keeps the water out, but un- like rubber or plastic, the cotton "breathes" so the wearer doesn't get wet from prespiration inside. The jackets are made in York- shire, England, and come in all sizes for men, ladies and children. The two basic colours are olive green and navy with printed colour patterns available. They've been popular in the UK for many years, especially among fashionable country people who enjoy riding, watching eques- trian events, birding, observing nature, or just plain hiking in the often wet rural areas of England. And the jackets are considered fashionable enough to be worn in the presence of Royalty. In fact, some members of the Royal Fam- ily sport the jackets on occasion, along with the traditional green "Wellies." This combination of style and function is what Mr. Obern and Mr. Saric believe will be the at- traction for Canadian buyers. They see no reason why they won't catch on with birders, hik- ers, naturalist, fishermen and hunters on this side of the Atlan- tic. The partners call their market- ing company Spencefield House (named for the school they attend- ed in the UK) and they will be dealing directly with the buying public through mail order. Aside from the waterproof and windproof quality of the lined jackets, they are designed for the outdoors. With a snap-on hood, elastic cuffs, heavy duty stitching, RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, BA. Lib. When they approached the British manufacturer earlier this year with the idea of marketing the jackets in Canada, the compa- ny was delighted and gave Spence- field House exclusive rights in this country. And with a retail price of $180, the partners feel this is rea- sonable for a garment of quality that will keep out the wet and the cold. The partners are confident that jackets will catch on in Canada.
