IRIN LRA BOBBIE DREW Active school volunteer - PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 13, 1968 -- 3 Bobbie Drew to run for trustee Port Perry resident Bobbie Drew has announced that she will be seeking election this fall as Scugog trustee on the Durham Board of Education. Mrs. Drew, who has lived in Port Perry for the past 20 years, has been actively involved in edu- cation locally for several years as a volunteer and part-time employ- ee with the Board. She has been a member of the RH Cornish PTA. She was chair- man of a committee that raised more than $60,000 for such things as AV equipment, comput- ers, sports and playground equip- ment at the school. She has worked in the office of the school and as a teachers as- sistant for special education class- es at both Cornish and Prince Al- bert Schools. "I have always had an interest in education," she told the Star. She and her her husband Richard Do not enter signs popular in rec rooms The on-going problem of people using the alley-ways on both sides of the Post Office for access to Queen Street came before council again Monday. Although signs have been posted on three occassions, they keep dis- appearing. "They are popular signs for a rec-room", Mr. Macdonald told council, "and we just keep losing them." Mayor Taylor told the road su- perintendent that the signs should be replaced, no matter how many times we loose them. "Sooner or later their rec-rooms will be filled and they'll leave them alone", he - said. The Township has been trying to encourage motorists not to use the alley-ways to get out onto Queen Street as is causes a traffic hazard, not only to motorists, but to the public as well. As a member of the PTA, she served on a committee that was active in the plans for a new school in Port Perry. Construction of that new school on Simcoe Street North will start this month for comple- tion next September, and Mrs. Drew said one thing the commit- tee tried to do was convince the Board to make it larger. She said she was disappointed that the new school will open with portables, and one of her pri- orities, if elected as a trustee, will be to work for an addition to the school. "I certainly intend to keep plugging away (for an addition) to that school," she stated. She said she will also work hard to enhance communications between herself as a trustee, par- ents and the Board of Education. She would like to use the local media on a regular basis for a col- umn to keep parents informed of education issues. "If elected, I will treat this as my full-time job. I think I'm ap- proachable and I intend to do my very best for education in our community." ' Along with her interests in ed- ucation, Mrs. Drew, 41, has been active in other coummunity groups and organizations. She is a past secretary of the local Cham- ber of Commerce, and elder in the United Church and member of the Church choir, and an active work- er with the Scugog Choral Socie- ty. This will be her second at- tempt at election to the Durham Board. In 1985, with five persons seeking the two Scugog seats on the Board, she polled 1772 votes and came within six votes of get- ting elected. Mrs. Drew is the second can- didate to announce a candidacy for the Durham Board in Scugog. In- cumbent trustee Joyce Kelly of Blackstock will be running for a second term. Debbie Tredway, the other incumbent will not be seek- ing re-election. Elections to the School Board are held November 14, the same day as the municipal elections. Terry Fox Run planned for September 18th For the first time in several years, there will be a Terry Fox Run in Port Perry this month. The five kilometre run (you can walk, jog, cycle, stroll, push a baby carriage, etc) will take place this coming Sunday Sep- tember 18 from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Jean Coe, organizer of the Run in Port Perry, said the start and finish will be in Palmer Park, and to encourage families to take part, the course will be through the residential streets of Port Per- Ms. Coe said she read in the Star several weeks ago that Na- tional organizers were looking for somebody to co-ordinate a run in Port Perry and she decided to take on the job. September 18 is the day when communities all across Canada hold similar runs in memory of the late Terry Fox and his efforts to raise money for cancer research in Canada. Ms. Coe said she is hoping the Port Perry run will raise about $4,000. The last time a run here was held about $3,000 was raised. Pledge sheets are available in many downtown stores and busi- 'ness in Port Perry. Pledge money can be deposit- ed at any bank the day after the race. Although called the Terry Fox Run, participants can cover the five KM at their own speed and pace.
