This attractive, clever pair has worked together for over ten years, performing in such venues as Garbo's, Teller's Cage, and Angelo's. They finally partnered to mold their current frisky show which tailors material for each new audience. Topical subject matter (the audience is even re- quested to challenge Warrack to compose an instant song, given the subject and the first four notes of the audience's choice), combin- ed with the pair's engaging per- sonalities, has made the per- formers especially popular. David Warrack is one of Canada's top writers in musical theatre and has written and star- red in many hit musical revues, notably Toronto, Toronto, the longest running show in Toronto's theatre history. He has been musical director at the Limelight dinner Theatre, producing such shows as Chorus Line and Evita. David could also be heard regularly on CBC Morningside playing his original music. Theatre critic Robert Crew lauds David's writing as "witty", his tunes '"'lively", and pronounces 'yuppie satire' as his decided forte. Much of Warrack's material is structured around the theme of relationships as it ventures into Gilbert and Sullivan take-offs or country and western spoofs, to add to his grab-bag of musical styles. Can you just imagine an assault on Toronto high society dubbed "Janet, the Granite Club Gir!"'? Or how about potshots at Baby Boomers' obsessions such as home renovations -- or singles bars? Warrack skewers them royally. The team's distaff half, Edda Gaborek, is a sprightly, versatile performer with a voice to match. To Warrack's piano accompani- ment, her lyrics range through ballads to parodies on the songs of to-day and yesterday. Edda has performed at the Stratford Festival and Ottawa's national Arts Centre, as well as having ap- peared often on CBC Television. She was a finalist in the '"'DuMaurier Search for the Stars". Now, as part of their duo, Gaborek writes and performs special material for prestigious clients as well as fills many cabaret-type engagements. A definite 'find' for the musical stage. So all of you who enjoy topical satire spiced with music and bak- ed just right, Irwin Smith has tickets for Warrack and Gaborek. On Oct. 1, let them entertain you!
