See you on your 50th from all of us at No to free trade debate Durham Region council has decided not to jump into the free trade debate. At the meeting September 21, the council voted 20-9 to ignore a request for support from Toronto City council on a resolution op- posing the free trade agreement be- tween Canada and the United States. The Toronto City council is asking municipalities with popu- lations over 50,000 for support of its resolution which condemns the agreement and asks that national opinion on free trade by sought through a federal election. Regional councillors, includ- ing Scugog's Lawrence Malcolm opposed to supporting the resolu- tion, argued that while the free trade agreement is vitally impor- tant to the country, it is not a mu- nicipal issue. And some suggested that if municipalities start getting in- volved in national issues, the fed- eral government might start get- ting involved in issues that are the domain of the municipalities. Two regional councillors with ties to the New Democratic Party, - argued that the council should support the Toronto resolution. Brian Nicholson (Oshawa) and Tom Edwards (Whitby) said free trade is a particular importance to Durham with its large manufactur- ing sector, and the council should take a position of opposition to the agreement.
