Both the Regional Police and the Whitby OPP report no fatali- ties and no serious injuries as a re- sult of the long weekend acci- * dents. But the Provincial Police is alarmed at what is an apparent trend on long weekends in the province: an increase in the num- ber of fatalities on Ontario high- ways. Information from OPP Traffic HQ in Toronto shows that for the last three years the number of peo- ple killed in accidents on the holi- day weekends has increased. This year to date, the five long weekends of the year, have resulted in 69 fatalities. Last year, the number was 57 fatalities, and in 1986, there were 37 persons killed over the five long week- ends. It is not known at this time how many persons lost their lives in Ontario over the Thanksgiving weekend, but last year, there were 11 deaths. 3 - The OPP has a policy of "strict enforcement" of all laws re- lating to drinking and driving and offenses under the Highway Traf- fic Act. ¢ 0 i 4a § 4 "hd pe 2 YE < an 3 3 PU 8 I 20 KE { fi'3 tg / h Se a RR RS eh REELS ti RAR ER RE : 8 Goro comm em ~ % 578 Vy The best window display in the Queen Street. mer- chants Apple Festival on Saturday morning was at Settlement House.
