There are about 180 of these people working for the Red Cross Homemakers Service in. Durham Region (45 in the Scugog- Uxbridge area) The week of October 16-22 has been declared Red Cross Homemakers Week, as a way of recognizing the vital service pro- vided to the community, and to let the public know that this service exists for those who need it. Ilean Pugh of Prince Albert has been a homemaker with the Red Cross for the past six years. Mrs. Pugh works a full 40 hour week and enjoys it thoroughly. Mrs. Pugh has been active in volunteer work in the community for many years, said she became interested in the homemaking ser- vice six years. "I thought it would be nice to continue working at something I feel is worthwhile and get paid for it," she said. Erika Kirstein, the assistant supervisor of the service for Dur- ham Region, said Mrs. Pugh is typical of the homemakers. "They are very dedicated people." The aim of the service is assist the elderly or those who are ill or recently released from hospital. In addition to such tasks as meal preparation, household clean- ing and shopping, homemakers may provide bedside care, walk- ing, eating, dressing and personal hygiene. In many instances, the Home- maker may be the only visitor a person has, so communications are important as well, Many of those who receive the homemakers service would not be capable of living on their own in the homes without it. The service is available 24 hours per day, seven days each week. The Red Cross Homemakers Service is non-profit with funds coming from the United Way and government. Clients pay a fee for the service, which often is covered by OHIP.
