| 26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 18, 1988 Last minute dramatics in 5-4 victory over Ajax Axemen MolJacks start on a positive note The Port Perry MoJacks saved the best for last as they took to the ice for the first time Sunday night against the Ajax Axemen. Trailing 4-3 with less than a minute to play, the MoJack light- ning struck twice to give the team a 5-4 win over the rough and ready Ajax squad in a very entertaining Junior C "home opener" at the Scugog Arena. Coupled with an 8-0 drubbing Oct. 11 of the Madoc Hurricanes, the MoJacks are off on the right foot with a pair of victories as they begin defense of the Central Junior gue crown from last year. Considering that Sunday's ame against the Axemen was Just the second outing of the regu- lar schedule for the MoJacks (the third for Ajax), it was a highly en- tertaining affair with both teams showing lots of speed and hustle and a willingess to dish out some heavy hits. The Axemen looked like they were en route to their third straight victory as they held at 4-3 lead going into the final minute of the third period. Coach Mel Brown pulled net- - minder Jeff Lynch with 51 sec- onds to play and the MoJacks went to work. Len Giacalone and Thane Ellis worked very hard to keep the puck in the Ajax zone and it was Ellis who dumped a pass to Brad Men- zies in front and he tipped it across the line to knot the score at 4-4, with 33 seconds left. Just 16 seconds later, the Mo- Jacks went to work again and roo- kie Bill Lawrenson pulled the trig- ger for the winner. Jim Gibbens and Jeff Fitchett controlled the puck deep in the Ajax zone and fed a pass to Law- renson who was parked alone near the crease. He calmly waited for Axeman goalie Tony Stabile to make the first move, then flipped the disc under the cross bar. In what was a very rugged hockey , the MoJacks opened the scoring at the mid-point of the first when Brad Menzies snapped a quick shot that caught the inside of the post. John Harman drew the assist. The Axemen took advantage of a MoJacks turnover early in the second with Mike Coulson get- ting the goal. At 8:55, the MoJacks again took a one goal lead on the power play with Harman, Menzies and Warren Geer doing some nifty passing deep in the Ajax zone. Harman finished the play off. But three minutes later, Coul- son clicked for the Axemen as he was all by himself in front of Mo- Jack net keeper Jeff Lynch. The visitors struck quickly in the third with Mike Rawn doing the damage, both on breakaways. His second goal came as the Mo- Jacks enjoyed a two man advan- tage. With a two goal lead, it looked like the Axemen were go- ing to win their third straight game, but Brad Menzies cut the margin to 4-3 at 11:08, again on a ue aay passing play from Geer an " And that set the stage for the final minute dramatics that gave the MoJacks the victory. ~The line of Menzies, Harman and Geer was buzzing all evening for the MoJacks and it showed on the score-sheet as Menzies had three goals and an assist, Harman a goal and two assists and Geer three assists. With a little luck around the net, Geer might have popped a couple of goals himself. If their play Sunday is any in- dication, these three Port Perry na- tives are going to be Excedrin- makers for goalies in the Central Junior League. Jeff Lynch played a strong game in nets for the MoJacks. He's an Ottawa native who comes to the team via Ottawa and he showed Sunday night why Mo- Jack officials are so enthusiastic about this talent. The opening night crowd was smaller than expected. Too bad for those fans who stayed home to watch baseball on the tube as they missed a superb hockey game. It was rough and rugged from start to finish. Steve Fountain and Steve Connors both left early for separ- ate scraps, and their absence left a big gap in the MoJack defense. Paul Berry, Phil McBride, Chris Edmonston saw a lot of ice as did versatile Thane Ellis and Bill Lawrenson. The MoJacks opened the regu- lar schedule on the road October 11, and they put two points on the board thanks to an 8-0 thump- ing of the Madoc Hurricanes. It was a game filled with mi- nor penalties on both sides, and the MoJack specialty teams played a big role with four power play markers and two while short- handed. Next home game for Port Per- ry is this coming Sunday (Oct. 23) when the Trenton Hawks are in town for faceoff at 7:30 PM. NOTEPAD: It was nice to see Mike McQuade in the black and white stripes calling the off-sides in Sunday's game. Mike suffered very serious leg injuries in a car accident more than a year ago. It's been a long and painful struggle for Mike to just get back on skates, never mind be ing able to son Kellen, 4, had the honours of dropping work the lines in a Junior C hock- ey game. Rumour has it that the Lind- say Muskies have signed a Pee Wee age player this season. Mother Jackson's Open Kitch- ens of Port Perry is once again sponsoring the MoJacks this sea- son, the longest sponsorship of any team in the Central League. The MoJacks had nine Port Perry natives in the line-up for Sunday's game.
