On Saturday, October 15, 1988, armwrestlers from all Provinces in Canada took part in the Pro- Am Canadian Stand-Up Arm- wrestling Challenge held in Toronto. Over 150 competitors vied for gold, silver and bronze medals and National titles in two divisions, Amateur and Professional. The intensive training that Mike Haigh, Captain, subjected the Port Perry Armwrestling Team to over the past several months, paid off handsomely and we can be rightfully proud to be the hometown of Champions! In the Amateur Championships, the results were: Bantamweight Division: Terry Barton (P.P.AW.) Gold Medal. Lightweight Division: Pat Mastrangelo (P.P.A.W.) Gold Medal. Middleweight Division: Dan Wells (P.P.A.W.) Gold Medal. Light-Heavyweight Divi- sion: Garth Carlson, (P.P.A.W., sponsored by Wiggans Landscap- , Bowmanville) Gold Medal. these Team members are now ranked, officially, as Canadian Amateur Champions in their respective weight divisions. In the Professional Champion- ships, in the most heavily-entered category of the Tournament, Mike (sponsored by Schildt Machining Ltd., Port Perry) pull- ed against world-ranked op- ponents and claimed the Bronze Medal. The Gold Medal winner was Serge Usereau (Quebec), reigning World Champion, and Phil Stoppart (Barrie, Ontario) took the silver. In other divisions the Klock Brothers, Mike and Rick of Port Novice H.L. Novice House League action got underway October 15 at the Scugog Arena with two games played. : Both were exciting games that featured close checking and good goaltending. In game one, Port Perry Print- ing doubler up on Rem 4-2, and in Game two, there were some fi- nal minutes heroics as Davids Hairstyling and Van Camp Con- tracting battled it out to a 2-2 tie. For Port Perry Printing, Aa- ron Levy led the way with a hat Ladies Auxiliary Faceoff The Port Perry Minor Hockey Ladies Auxiliary has started the 88-89 season off with a very suc- cessful Skate Exchange. Cory Branton tended goal for the Printers. Ryan Moynes and Chris Jamieson assisted on two of the four goals. Hitting the twine for Remax were Ian Parliament from Anson Crosier and Shane Norton unas- sisted. Jeremy Gibson played in net. : All the scoring came in the second and their periods. GAME TWO You could not ask for a more exciting finish as Davids and Van Camp battled right down to the fi- nal seconds for the 2-2 draw. Van Camp opened a 2-0 lead on goals by Blayne Kinnunen, with Brad Johnston assisting both. Davids got one back in the second as Heather Tredway scored on a brekaway assisted by Jay Fletcher. And then with time running out on the clock, Jay Fletcher tied the game with four seconds to play, much to the delight of his appy team-mates. There are five teams in the Novice H.L. this season. Parents should check the schedule posted in arena outer lobby for the teams and games this coming Saturday. Perry, won Gold and Silver medals, respectively, in the Amateur Flyweight event. As always, Port Perry Arm- wrestling Team donated a hand- some trophy to the Most Sport- smanlike Competitor of the day, whom they judged to be Rick Blanchard of Ottawa, Ontario. Rick finished second to Dan Wells in the Middleweight Division. To Mike, who formed Port Perry Armwrestling Team almost a year ago, the Tourna- ment was the culmination of months of hard training, rigid self-discipline and effort: 'My - guys have become a real threat to the competition at any tourna- ment. We walk in and you hear people saying: "Oh-oh! The Port Perry Team's here!" ... seems everyone knows now that we'll do our best to give them a hard time at the table - and we usually manage to win a few trophies along the way! At every contest people come up to me to ask about the Team, about Port Perry or about our training methods and different techniques. Not only that but, since about six months ago, there has been an announcement PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 18, 1988 -- 29 Port arm wrestlers mine gold at Pro-Am to the crowd that our Port Perry Team is competing and, general- ly, we seem to have gained some kind of minor celebrity status, which is unusual. It's very flatter- ing and, to tell you the truth, we enjoy the recognition and our reputation." Along with this, though, goes some responsibility and added pressure, Mike says. As he told The Star: '"We now have almost an obligation to attend and com- pete in sanctioned tournaments wherever they are, whether local, Provincial, National or World events, as well as return the com- pliment to the armwrestlers who came out and supported Port Perry at Festival Days in July, and our main cause for concern is being able to get to the tour- naments! Right now, three of the Team are still seeking sponsors to help with expenses, and I would appeal to any local business or organization which would enjoy the benefits of the publicity we can give them, to help us out." On November 19th, the 1988 World Championships are to be held in Hollywood, California, and as many of the Team who can will be there to represent Canada and, of course, Port Perry. They need our support so let's all wish them well in what will be their biggest tournament of the year.
