' 2 "3 221i 5 12d07~0) vensou' -- AA TY VISIR TEHOO 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 18. 1988 Kuipers nominated for Christian Heritage Party | A 63-year old Port Perry area businessman has been nominated as the candidate for the Christian Heritage Party in Durham riding. John Kuipers was acclaimed as the candidate October 13 in front of about 100 Party support- ers at the meeting in Tyrone. Mr. Kuipers, who lives on Concession 9, Scugog, told the Star he agreed to let his name stand for the Party in the Novem- ber 21 federal election because he believes in what the Christian Heritage Party (CHP) stands for. "We want to see some chang- es. The country is on a moral backslide and we can't keep on go- ing this way. A voice in Ottawa is needed," he stated. The CHP is a newly formed party in Canada, and expects to field about 60 candidates across the country in the November 21 election. While Mr. Kuipers holds no illusions about his chances of winning Durham riding for the CHP, he said the election cam- paign offers a chance to inform the public about what the Party stands for. As the name "Christian" im- plies, the CHP takes a strong stance on the so-called moral is- sues like abortion, pornography, homosexual rights, and capital punishment. The Party is staunchly pro-life and believes the unborn child must have legal protection. The Party calls for strict laws 971% points. Fielding. strong - fourth. Yesterday's Nemories (From page 7) points, followed by Blackstock with 163 points and Millbrook with Fire prevention week got off to a bad start this week in Cart- wright. Monday night the Caesarea fire department were call- ed to a blaze at the dump east of Blackstock and while they were extinguishing it, a call came to fight a fire in a tobacco kiln on the farm of Victor Malcolm. Although they were not able to save the kiln, the fire brigade managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. 25 YEARS AGO "Thursday, October 17, 1963 Mrs. Maria Fielding, Manchester, celebrated her 90th bir- thday on October 13th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Construction has begun on the new Baptist Church at the cor- ner of Queen and Rosa Streets and it is hoped the building will be completed this coming spring. On the capital punishment is- sue, Party literature states the fol- lowing: "We affirm that man was created in the image of God, and that justice, therefore, requires the ultimate deterrence and punish- ment for the shedding of innocent blood. We believe that the law should provide for justice which includes capital punishment for those found guilty by unanimous verdict of judge and jury." The Party is opposed to uni- versal daycare because of the cost and because "such a scheme would serve to further encourage mothers to neglect their primary duties to rear their own children." The CHP favours the princi- ples of the free trade agreement be- tween Canada and the United ~ States, but not at the expense of the environment or national sove- reignty on natural resources. Other parts of the platform call for a beefed up military, con- tinued commitment to NATO and NORAD; the right to own proper- ty guaranteed by law; and tougher regulations on immigration and/or refugees. Mr. Kuipers, who has been a member of the Party for about a year, said he agrees with the Party platforms which he described as a "strong emphasis on family life and values, fair government and responsible spending." A native of Holland, he came to Canada in 1948, lived in the Bowmanville area for a while and operated a broiler farm in Scugog until 1975. Since then he has worked as a real estate agent and now describes himself as a consultant in real estate and development. Mr. Kuipers and his wife Nel- lie have eight grown children.
