ETE IY TIEN "Thee. "TT Te MoJacks scramble back with late goal to nip Trenton Hawks Not a classic, but they'll take the 2 points It won't go into the books as a classic, but the Port Perry Mo- Jacks will gladly take the two points as they scrambled for a 6-5 victory Sunday night over the Trenton Hawks at the Scugog Arena. The win gives the MoJacks a 3-1 record in the early going of the Central Junior C Hockey League. Their only loss so far was Oc- tober 17 in Cobourg at the hands of the Cougers by a 4-3 score. For a while Sunday night it appeared as if the MoJacks might be in for their second straight loss as Trenton opened a 3-1 lead in a sluggish and scrambly first peri- Gregg Rupnow and Wayne Cuculuzzi staked the visitors to a quick 2-0 lead early in the first be- fore Warren Geer replied for the MoJacks with assists from John Harman and Dave Sims. Late in the period Trenton add- ed another on the power play with Cuculuzzi finding the range with a long slap shot through a crowd in front of MoJack netminder Jeff Lynch. The MoJacks found some life in the second period, sparked by the play of Warren Geer, John Harman and Brad Menzics. This line combined for a very snappy goal at 3:22 with Geer fin- ishing off a beautiful three-way passing play. And at the mid- point it was Menzies who pulled the trigger from the slot on passes from Geer and Harman. But the Hawks once again took a lead at 14:25 when the Mo- Jacks gave up a loose puck and Todd Smith beat Lynch from the right side with a slap shot. The MoJacks knotted things at 4-4 late in the period while en- joying a two man advantage. And it was Harman who found the range with passes from Geer and Menzies. At 6:54 of the third, the Mo- Jacks finally took a lead for the first time on a solid effort by cap- tain Thane Ellis. The team was killing a penalty at the time when Ellis took passes from Greg War- riner and Steve Connors. He broke into the clear and fired a shot that just trickled through the glove of Hawk goalie Lonnie Lewis. But at the mid-point, the Hawks pounced on a loose puck in front of Lynch as Heffernan scored to tie the game at 5-5. The game winner came at 16:32 after the MoJacks exerted considerable pressure around the Trenton net. Hawk netminder Lewis was way out of the crease to block a shot and the rebound found its way onto the stick of Steve Con- nors. He made no mistake with a ~ slapper from 25 feet. Jeff Fitchett and Chris Edmondson were credit- ed with the assists. The Hawks dug their grave a little deeper as ref Frank Robinson assessed Lewis a two minute mi- nor for protesting too loudly on the Connors goal. Jeff Lynch turned aside 28 shots in the MoJack cage while Lewis faced 24. Most of this game was played between the blue lines. The line of Geer-Harman- Menzies was brilliant at times in this one and counted 11 points for the MoJacks. The MoJacks took 18 minors, while the Hawks were called for 23 and a ten minute misconduct. On October 17 in Cobourg, the MoJacks ran into a long string of penalties and allowed the Cou- gers to score twice in the third en route to a 4-3 win. Len Giacalone, Jeff Fitchett and Bill Lawrenson counted for the MoJacks. Ray Murphy had two for Cobourg. Brad Bricknell had his first start in net during the regular schedule for Port Perry and faced 28 shots. The Cougers had just four mi- nors in this one, while the Mo- Jacks took 11, plus three miscon- ducts late in the game which cost Steve Fountain a two game sus- nsion. NOTEPAD: John Lally and Mark Barkey have left the MoJacks to play with the Port Juveniles where they. will get plenty of ice time this season. Sunday's game was the first this season for John Hartford, who had a touch of mono. In four games, the MoJacks have surrendered just 13 goals, best in the league to date. Rob Baker, who played so well in the playoffs for the Mo- Jacks last season is with Smiths Falls this year in the Central Jun- ior B league. That team is off to a slow start. The MolJacks are idle until DAGMAR OPEN HOUSE Sunday, October 30th, 11 AM to 10%0 OFF MEMBERSHIPS (paid by cash) 5% OFF CREDIT PURCHASES PM 'GIANT SKI SWAP 8&as-2002 Free Refreshments 686-3207 this coming Sunday night Oct. 30, when they host the Lindsay Muskies. They had better make the most of the rest as the league schedule makers have given the MoJacks a heck of a week starting October 30 at home to Lindsay. The next night, they are in Cobourg, two nights later in Trenton and two days after that in Wellington. They finish this busy week on November 6 at home to Lindsay again. The bus rides alone to Co- bourg, Trenton and Wellington will be tiring. Five games in seven nights is a big test for the team, a very im- portant part of the schedule. Crowds have been sparse for the first two home games at the Scugog Arena. Faceoff against Lindsay on Oct. 30 is 7:30 PM MoJack forward John Harman found the net on this shot during Junior C ac- tion Sunday night against Trenton Hawks. Harman and linemates Brad Menzies and Warren Geer clicked for 11 points and were a big factor in the 6-5 win for the team. The MoJacks are now three wins and one los s after four games. Next home game at the Scugog Arena Is October 30 against Lindsay.
