cali: LOUISE CALVERT A $100-million expansion and redevelopment of Oshawa Centre, to be completed in 1990, was an- nounced by Campeau Corporation on Oct. 18. A total of 278,000 square feet of retail space will be added, bring- ing the total retail area for the mall to almost 1.3 million square feet. The new Oshawa Centre will have 300 retail outlets after the expansion, including a two-storey, 90,000-square-foot Zellers and eight Famous Players Cinemas. The existing Eaton's will be ex- panded and a full-scale food court established. "This $100-million investment reflects our confidence in the future of Oshawa and Durham region," said Paul Campbell, senior vice-president, Campeau Corporation. "It is a rapidly- growing community and we are proud to be part of that growth." He added that there is a strong demand for retail space in Oshawa Centre and the expansion will allow Campeau to develop a more balanced tenant mix of fashion, specialty stores and service-oriented businesses. Oshawa Mayor Allan Pilkey welcomed the announcement. "Over the past 32 years, our citizens have watched Oshawa. Centre grow from a small strip plaza into a vital retail area in the city," he said. "The expansion will create more jobs for Oshawa and reaffirm Oshawa Centre as High Energy Studio ~ 159 CASIMIR ST., PORT PERRY daily | AEROBIC & TONING © OLASSES =. for all levels 1-705-357-3519 (after 4:00 PM) Professional, Qualified Instructors Babysitting available for all daytime classes. the regional commercial centre for Durham." Since it opened in 1956, Oshawa Centre has more than tripled in size, with four separate expan- sions since its purchase by Campeau Corporation in the ear- ly 1970s. The mall now streatches over three-quarters of a mile and is one of the longest in Canada. A total of 250 jobs will be created during the construction period which is scheduled to begin in November. 1988. Some 3.200 people will be employed at Oshawa Centre after completion, due in the fall of 1990, compared to 2,500 at present. The new Oshawa Centre will contribute tax revenues in excess of $3 milion per year to the city. Mr. Campbell noted that the majority of construction will take place below ground level in an area now used for shipping and receiving, which will minimize in- convenience to both customers and retailers. The expansion will create 120,000 square feet of add- - ed space adjacent to the existing lower retail level. The entire centre will receive a complete upgrading, both inside and out, and skylights running the full length of the building will be installed. A new main entrance will be created on the west side of the centre, in front of the Eaton's store, to provide a central focus. Other entrances will be enhanced ® and enlarged. Architect for the project is Crang and Boake Inc. of Toronto. Campeau Corporation is a ma- jor developer and owner of shop- ping centres, office buildings and industrial parks in North America.
