Less government is better government, and much cheaper, 100. That in a nutshell pretty wells sums up the philosophy of Rolf Posma. He's the Libertarian Party can- didate for Durham riding in the November 21 federal election. The 47-year old Oshawa resi- dent (he lives in the riding) who works in export department at General Motors is proud of the fact he ran against NDP leader Ed Broadbent in the last federal elec- tion, though he only collected 352 1} votes. | In an interview with the Star : last week, Mr. Posma admitted he I has to be realistic about his chanc- es this time in Durham riding. But he said the campaign is a chance to spread the word about the Libertarian Party line which is strongly free enterprise and staunchly against big government, especially big bureaucratic govern- Ih ment. Hi He said the Libertarian Party' is about 15 years old, has never elected anyone to Ottawa, but will run about 100 candidates across | the country this election. | The closest a Libertarian has | come to electoral succes was sev- eral years ago in a Kingston area by-election when the candidate ~ picked up 14 per cent of the vote and finished ahead of the NDP. Mr. Posma said he at one time was a Conservative, but he | didn't like the way both Conserva- ~ tive and Liberal Parties "began moving to the left" to garner votes. : He is especially critical of the New Democrats and policies of ~ social welfare. - APPLES for SALE - Posma carries Libertarian message in Durham riding "Ed Broadbent says (to the people) give us most of your money and we'll do everything for you. We say (to the people) keep your money and do things for yourself," stated Mr. Posma. Government, he said, should be "minimum government," con- centrating its efforts and power on national defense, internal law and order and the administration of justice and the court systems. Mr. Posma said he's a big ad- mirer of Margaret Thatcher in England and the way she has at- tempted to dismantle some social welfare policies. He also said Mar- garet Thatcher is right in her op- position to total sanctions against South Africa. Mr. Posma said that trade and economic sanctions against South Africa serve only to put blacks out of work and create poverty. While Libertarians, he said, favour such things as the sale of Crown corporations (Air Canada, Petro Can, etc) plus major reduc- tions in social welfare programs, the Party is not for sudden change. These things would have to be done gradually, slowly over time to minimize the disruptions and the fact that a lot of civil servants would be looking for jobs in the private sector. On specific issues such as abortion, Mr. Posma said he per- sonally believes that a fetus has legal rights, but the state has no right to tell a woman not to have an abortion. He favours capital punishment for certain crimes. Free trade is an issue the Li- bertarians strongly endorse. Mr. Posma said the Party wants the elimination of virtually all tariffs, Northern Spy -- Macintosh Delicious -- ldared -- Empire Durham Rd. 8, Port Perry 'WILLOWTREE ORCHARDS 985.9205 COMING SOON TO _ PORT PERRY CLASSIC CARE 40 WATER STREET NEUBODY pe 985-4104 " leaves you feeling invigorated. * NO MEMBERSHIP FEES * FOR MEN & WOMEN OF ALL AGES * NO CONTRACT TO SIGN * SUN TANNING also available * MANICURE, PEDICARE, FACIALS, WAXING High-tech toning machines move your body th rough acom- plete range of motion to perform a workout equivalent to hours of old fashioned exercise. Mr. Posma said he doesn't want his son, who is now eight, growing up in a society totally dominated by government. He said that currently 54 cents of every dollar earned by Canadi- ans is taken up in taxes, and if current trends continue, that figure will be 88 cents in 30 years. Mr. Posma is the 6th candi- date seeking election in the new riding of Durham which includes all of Scugog and Uxbridge Town- ships, the town of Newcastle, Oshawa north of Rossland Road and Whitby north of Taunton Road. The others are Liberal Doug Moffatt, NDP Marg Wilbur, Con- servative Ross Stevenson, Green Party Harold Tausch and Christian Heritage Party John Kuipers. eer Tes TION Less Government! ~ The bumper sticker on Rolf Posma's car pretty well sums up his political philosophy.
