Letters Changing Canadian history To The Editor: What is the matter with the Canadian Government and our Canadian laws? I am referring to three impor- tant parts of history which have recently been changed: 1. The Lord's Prayer has been taken out of our schools to please the minorities. Why can't they say their own prayers in silence? 2. The White Cross Ceremonies that Canadians honour with life 'and love are being discontinued for the same reason. Minority groups are not compelled to take part in this most important part of Canadian history if they do not understand or agree with it. 3. I was under the impression that when you came to Canada to live you were obliged to pledge allegiance to the Canadian Flag and obey Canada's rules and regulations. I am sorry that every time a minority group rants and raves, we are forced to pacify them. We ar® Canadians first and our, Coun- "try of origin is second. Yours truly, Patrick Jarvie, Port Perry. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 1, 1988 -- 9 Where do 'candidates Istand on 'Post Office To The Editor: Rural Post Offices - Where do - our candidates stand on this im- - portant issue? At the direction of the Mulroney government, Canada Post has closed and/or privatized over 250 rural post offices (144 in Ontario and Quebec alone) in the past two years. The remaining federally _operated rural post offices (ap- proximately 5000) are slated to go in the next eight years unless the federal government puts a stop to this plan. This will mean the loss of 10,000 decently-paying jobs in rural Canada, 83 percent of which are now held by women. It will also be the loss of the only federal government presence in the ma- jority of our towns and villages. "The first priority of a trained employee in a federally operated post office is our mail. The first priority of a business person who has contracted to run a privatiz- ed postal outlet has to be her/his -own business. Peter Archer, a retail postal outlet operator in Blue Ridge, Alberta writes, in a letter to Canada Post:"...a R.P.O., is not a profitable ven- ture...We are Not prepared to ac- cept automatic renewal of the contracts..."'. Randy Arcand, a store owner from Celista, B.C., says: "It is a lose-lose situation for us, and if we had to do this all over again, we wouldn't...We need postmasters reinstated!' If people like Archer and Arcand - abandon the Retail Postal Outlet, as they would like to do, what's next for their towns? Already Morewood, Ontario has had three operators because of serious dissatisfaction with the Canada Post contract. If the business peo: $0.
