More than $19.1 million was rais- ed during the month of April to fund the fight against cancer. In the Port Perry community, the Scugog Branch of the Society raised over $33,196. Doris Taylor, Chairperson for the Scugog Branch said the amount raised shows that Cana- dian Cancer Society volunteers do not intend to give up fighting cancer. '"The success of this year's campaign," she said, "points to the dedication and com- mitment of our volunteers and to the generosity of the people of On- tario who support our goal of eliminating cancer and easing the suffering it causes." In the Scugog Area, funds were raised this year by canvassing more households and businesses than before and by hosting more special events. The money raised, Letters (From page 9) ple say no, the community is the real loser, because post office counter service moves right out of town. The elderly, the handicap- ped and the fixed income families will find it increasingly more dif- ficult to get their mail, especial- ly in bad weather. Rural Canadians deserve better than this. The Rural Post Office is recognized as the heart of small communities, and business in rural Canada need competent, reliable service. The question is: Where does each of the candidates in this riding stand on the post office issue? What will they and their party do, if elected, to stop these closures? Brian Mulroney promised to clean up the environment but he let us down, just like the Liberals did before him.
