42 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 1, 1988 Bantam A's off to a brilliant start The Port Perry Bantam A team - bas come into the '88-'89 season with a brilliant start. The Bantams first game was their first league game as well and was against Stouffville, a hard hitting team with great quickness. However, Port Perry proved to be too much for Stouffville this time and trounced them 10-1. With ° 1 win under their belt, they took on Little Britain in an exhibition game at Scugog Arena. Port Perry was just a little quicker and stronger than the Little Britain squad which resulted in a score of 14-1 in favour of Port Perry. After 2 great wins for Port Perry, the team was on somewhat of a high note when they took on Lindsay Wed., Oct. 24. The Scugog Arena was filled with Port Perry fans who showed their sup- port for the home team. The Port Perry squad got off to a very slow start and discovered they were trailing 3-0 by the halfway mark of the 1st period. Lindsay took advantage of Port Perry's lack of effort and capitalized on the majority of their chances. Port Perry finally realized it was a hockey game and not a ballet recital and started to finish off checks and pick up the pace of the game. Port started to get better chances at Lindsay's goaltender and it was Jason Towns who fired a shot from the point to shorten the gap to 3-1 for Lindsay. Brett ~ Puckrin and Jan Heyes drew the assists. In the second period, Port Perry looked to be a brand new team. The first goal of the period was by Port's Jeff Parry from Jan Heyes and Jason Towns. Two minutes later John Ennis tied the game at 3 goals apiece when he took a pass from Jason Towns. With the game tied at 3, Port Perry scored 3 unanswered goals in the 2nd period. Scoring were Stephen Laird (2) and Jan Heves. HUI Drawing assists were Jeff Parry, Dan Sluggett, Jan Heyes, Jason McBride and Jody Logan. Entering the 3rd period with Port Perry leading 6-3 they got on the board first when Jason McBride scored and increased the * lead to 7-3. Jan Heyes and Stephen Laird drew the assists. Lindsay retaliated with another goal to make it 7-4. Port Perry then decided to wrap the game up and scored 2 goals before the end of the game to make the final score 9-4 in favour of Port Perry, Scoring for Port were Jason Towns and Stephen Laird and drawing the assists were John Ennis (2), Brett Puckrin and Jeff Parry. Ray Doyle handled the duties in net and played great, keeping the puck out of the net and his team in the game. Port Perry now had 3 wins, no losses and no ties in 3 games. The squad can play good smart hockey. With this attitude, Port Perry travelled to Markham on Sun., Oct. 30-for an exhibition game against Markham's major "AA" No. 2 team. Port Perry came out strong and were set to take on Markham for the first period. Port Perry drew the first of five dents to Markham's ego. When Port's Jan Heyes who hit the net after passes from Jason McBride and John Ennis. This put Port ahead 1-0. It was then Steven Staniland who found the Markham goalie's legs open and hit the five hole to put Port Perry 2 goals ahead. In the second period, the only goal was scored by Dan Sluggett after a beautiful passing play over Markham"s blue line and in- to the slot area. Jody Logan and "Jason McBride picked up the assists. ? With the Sonye 3-0 for Port erry entering the 3rd period they decided to play it safe and knock a few more goals in. Jason Cochrane scored late in the 3rd period with assists going to Jason Towns. Then Jeff Brett tipped the puck passed a Markham defenseman and scored on a breakaway to make the final 5-0 for Port Perry. Pick- ing up the shut out was Shawn Larocque who played spec- tacular, keeping his team in the -game at crucial times, Jeff Brett and Jan Heyes dished out the hits and fought it out in the corners to help their team to victory. With the team hitting and passing like they are now gives a good nucleus of knowledge of hockey for head coach Todd Wilbur to work with. However, the players must keep their head on straight, listen and learn to reach their goal of a win- ning season. Introducing this year's team are in order of position: goalies Shawn Larocque and Ray Doyle, defense Jason Towns, Greg Fit- zgerald, Brett Puckrin and Steve Staniland, centre Jason Cochrane, Jan Heyes and Dan Sluggett, left wing Stephen Laird, Jody Logan and John Ennis and on right wing are Jeff Brett, Jeff Parry and Jason McBride. The coaching staff is back from last year with head coach Todd Wilbur, asst. coach Lee Wilbur, manager Hillis Wilbur, and trainer Steve Durham all are behind the bench. Goaltender coach is Warren Nicholishen and the assist. manager is Carol Wilbur who manages the financial activities of the team. The sponsor of the Bantam 1 team is Mr. Ken and Diane Goreski of Goreski Insulation. The hockey season is back for another year, so come out and support your Goreski Insulation Bantam 1 team who's next game is Wed., Nov. 2 against Stouffville at Scugog Arena. Midgets work to improve On October 24, the Canadian Tire Midgets were host to the team from Bowmanville. Team members demonstrated a great deal of determination as they dug in and never gave up. Our first goal of the game and of the season was scored unassisted by Adam Cummings. An excellent passing play by Jerry Douma and Adam Cumm- . ings enabled Aaron Cochrane to net our second marker. In our final goal of the first period Paul Kett and Ed Toffin teamed up to allow Kett to score on a slap-shot from the top of the circle. Although there were several goals scored in the second period they were scored by the opposition. However, in the third period ~ Port Perry rallied to score two more goals. For our first goal of the third period Michael Butt was fed a pass from Paul Kett. Butt exhibited some fine stick handling and was able to pop the puck into the net. The red light blazed the last time for the Midgets at the twenty-one second mark of the third period. Aaron Cochrane managed to "slip one by the opposing goalie on LOSE WEIGHT before CHRISTMAS and KEEP IT OFF with our 'Maintenance' SPECIAL HI a pass from Michael Butt. The final score was 9-5 in favour of Bowmanville. Goalie Noel Lovering handled himself well as he faced in excess of forty shots. The boys have vastly improved their playing power since their 14-0 loss last week to Millbrook. BD THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY "OF DURHAM We would like to wish the team the best of luck this season.
