Mr. Provenzano has been fighting with the Township over his use of live bands at the restau- rant for over a year. When he threatened Monday not to pay the business taxes ow- ing an angry councillor Howard Hall said "you haven't been listen- ing. If you don't pay the taxes, in three years, the Township council take the property." Over a year ago, Mr. Proven- zano applied for a by-law zoning change that would allow him to employ live bands at the tavern. However, he did not follow through with requests from coun- cil for a fence around the property, air conditioning in the building (so the doors could be kept shut No to minutes by mail Scugog council does not want the municipality to start mailing out the minutes of council meet- ings to groups or organizations. However, the council pointed out Monday that any individual or member of an organization can in- spect the minutes of the meetings and have pertinent copies made at the Township offices on Perry Street. Council had a request from a property owners group in the Chalk Lake area for mailed copies of the minutes of the meetings. The members turned the re- quest down, fearing it could snow- ball into many groups making the same request. Antiques missing Several antique items valued at about $2,000 were reported missing in a break in at a Scugog farm house. Police said the break-in at the vacant farm house took place some time between October 19 and 26, and was discovered by a family friend, Some of the missing items include a corner cabinet, wash stand, setee, soup tureen, and sev- eral antique clocks and spitoons. Council refused to pass the zoning change and took Mr. Pro- venzano to court where he was convicted for breaking the by-law and fined $400. Mayor Jerry Taylor gave Mr. Provenzano a lecture Monday af- ternoon stating it is "your obliga- tion to pay your taxes. If you done what council asked (and put in the air conditioning) a year ago, you'd still be in business." Mr. Provenzano said he has put the business and building up for sale but has not been able to come up with a buyer. The restaurant-tavern is locat- ed at the four comers in Caesarea. Advance green light for 7A and Lilla St. An advanced green traffic light at the intersection of Highway 7A and Lilla Street would help clear congestion, according to an ana- lyst with Durham Region. And Scugog Township coun- cil agrees with the suggestion and will ask the provincial govern- ment to install an advanced green for westbound traffic attempting to turn south onto the Oshawa Road. "The advanced green (signal) looks like a very simple way to correct this problem," said coun- cillor Lawrence Malcolm Monday afternoon. The Township had asked Dur- ham region's traffic department to take a look at the intersection, es- pecially in light of the fact there 1s a school cross walk there. In a study last May, the Re- gion found 128 vehicles turned south off Highway 7A onto the Oshawa Road between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning. Vehicles turning southbound must cross the school cross walk where guards are taking children across the busy street. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 1, 1988 -- § OMB gives approval to 40 home subdivision The Ontario Municipal Board has given approval for a subdivi- sion of about 40 new homes on Union Ave. in Prince Albert. The decision was handed down Friday afternoon following a hear- ing the same day in the municipal chambers. The subdivision, to be devel- oped by Van Edwards Investments of Port Perry, is one the east side of Union Avenue near the inter- section of Josephine Street. Residents of Union Ave and Josephine Street objected to the development on the grounds it would increase traffic and could have a negative impact on wells in the area. In over-ruling the objections, the OMB found them to be with- out substance. The plans call for the homes to be built on large lots with piped municipal water and private septic systems.
