or FREER ' PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 8, 1988 -- 19 DON HARPER After watching Port Perry grow and change in the last 5 years, and after hearing one per- son after another sharing my con: cegns, I have decided to run for Council in Ward 2. Being a lifelong resident of Port Perry, Local Businessman, former Director & Coach of the Port Perry Minor Hockey Association, former Director and Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Scugog Mens Lob Ball League, and associated with many chari- ty fundraising organizations, I feel I can call myself a "Peoples Candidate" because my concerns _are yours, such as: "=< "No tax increases; another arena, ice pad; hire a Recreation & Park Director; additional downtown parking, preserve and expand parkland, clean up Lake Scugog; upgrade streets & sidewalks; new sanitation plant; Durham College Branch for Port Perry. CONTROL but not stop growth. Port Perry is more than home -- "It Is A Way Of Life." We can- not stop growth but we can con- trol it to benefit all. Let the developers pay for the programs through levies. If elected I will fight for yours & my concerns. Thank you. 985-949 Candidates for MARILYN PEARCE I graduated from the Universi- ty of Western Ontario in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ur- ban Geography. I taught high ~ school in Whitby for four years and presently am a Program Co- Ordinator with the Durham Region YMCA in Port Perry. Il am 40 years old, married with 2 children. I have been involved in the community as a member of the Long-Range Planning Com- mittee of the Scugog Library Board and as a family we are ac- tive members of the Port Perry United Church, minor baseball and minor hockey. The issues are clear in Port Perry. We must insure that ser- vices catch up to development whether it be in the area of recreation, parks, schools, roads or parking. Effecttive long-range planning is needed. It is impor- tant to work with regional and provincial governments to plan for our future. There is a need to assess what we have, what is needed and how we go about get- ting it. | I offer a total commitment of time and energy to insure that we create a home for the people of Scugog and not just another "bedroom community." I pro- mise to bring a positive, new, en- thusiastic approach to the Coun- cil of Scugog. Latterly, as financial consul- tant to small businesses, I operate my own corporation. During the fifteen-plus years of residing in Port Perry, I and my wife Marie, have raised our children, made many new friends, and thoroughly enjoyed the quiet charm and clean air of this town and surrounding area. I have followed the activities and deci- sions of Council with much in- terest, and some, at times severe, criticism over the past five or six years. I feel that my concerns - compel me to "GET INVOLV- ED." My decision was not made * lightly nor with a frivolous at- titude, but rather, with a sense of sincere responsibility coupled with my concerned interest. I, along with the many who have contacted me, would like to see the town retain it's unique flavour and yet still progress at a rate and cost that is acceptable to the pre- sent residents and their growing families. Your concerns are my concerns. Keith Charles - APPLES for SALE - WARD 2 COUNCILLOR ¥ MIRIAM PRICE ~ As a lifelong resident of Port Perry, I am thoroughly familiar with our community and its needs. My strong business background, proven record in community service, and involve- ment in the Chamber of Com- merce as Santa parade co- ordinator for 13 years, then as Director and later, President, prove my energy, dedication and organizational skills. | I will pursue key community concerns: careful future develop- ment of housing, industry, and water and sewage systems, planned review and extension of recreational facilities, and on- 'going improvement of the downtown core with emphasis on a parking study, combined with preservation of our town's unique heritage. Accessible and committed, with honesty and integrity, I will ac- tively participate in local govern- ment by attending to our residents and solving, wherever possible, their concerns. Don't waste this space. Small ads pay! Northern Spy -- Macintosh Delicious -- lIdared -- Empire CHORAL SOCIETY WILLOWTREE ORCHARDS Durham Rd. 8, Port Perry 985-9205 SCUGOG CHORAL SOCIETY --- presents -- 'OLIVER' DAVID MOUNT I have been a resident of Scugog Township for the past 10 years. I am married and live with my wife Dawn and our two children on Lilla Street. I am seeking election to Township Council because I am concerned about the needs of the community. I promise to listen to the concerns of other taxpayers and to act in the best interests of the community as a whole. I see a need for controlled growth and encouragement of light, job producing industry as a means of expanding our tax base. An important concern that: ~ must be addressed is the im- provement and expansion of the existing water and sewage treat- ment facilities. Without increas- ed treatment facilities, growth will be stifled or it will lead to in- "creased soil pollution by an ex- cessive number of septic tanks. Increasing soil pollution will ultimately lead to an increase in the pollution of Lake Scugog which is one of the areas prime resources and is a major source of local revenue and recreation. Prudent borrowing must not be ruled out as a means of financing these large capital expenditures. Regional and Provincial grants should also be explored. Continued growth results in an increasing need for more recrea- tional facilities and parkland to serve the needs of the expanding population. I am seeking your support so that I can support the needs of the community. I am a working fami- ly man who wants to work with other Members of Council on your behalf.
