Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Excellent crowds attended both all candidates meetings in this area - the candidates for the Federal Election which was held in Blackstock on Tuesday evening and the Candidates for the Municipal Election at the Lat- cham Centre, Port Perry on Wednesday evening. Readers are urged to be sure to make the ef- fort to go to vote next Monday - remember poor governments are elected by good electors who don't vote. Two corrections about the Garden Club bus trip going to the Royal Winter Fair this week - it is on Friday Nov. 11 and leaves at 9 a.m. from Nestleton Hall. A few seats still remain - call Kathleen Petrie at 986-4771 for information. Next Tuesday, November 15 there will be a public meeting about Recycling with a guest speaker held at Nestleton Hall at 8 p.m. This is your opportunity to learn specific information about this very'important matter. Remember Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. Mrs. Harold McLaughlin and Mrs. Joe Wygerde attended the Women's Institute Convention in Toronto for two days. They report many interesting sessions were "held there. Larry Hoskin of Lake Louise spent a few days in the area visiting his parents Frank and Muriel Hoskin and other relatives and friends. On Saturday, Grant and Neil --Sergers- EL McLaughlin and Jean Mahaffy at- tended the funeral service for Mrs. Bob Mahaffy in St. Mary's, Ontario. Margaret had put up a valiant struggle against cancer for a considerable time. Earl Trewin of Enniskillen passed away on Saturday after a lengthy illness. Many from this area attended the funeral or visited the funeral parlour over the weekend. Sympathy is extend- ed to his wife Ruby and family Doreen and Don. Melville Henry of Oshawa, a former Purple Hill boy passed away on the weekend. Several from this area called to pay respects at that funeral home as well. It is of interest that Bob Mahaf- fy, Melville Henry and Ruby (Toms) Trewin were all school mates at Purple Hill School. Sym- pathy is extended to all who are bereaved by these three deaths. At the weekly Tuesday evening card party the winners were 1 - Betsy Staniland, 2 - Laurrena Bright, 3 - Ann Taylor, 4 - Andy Munro, 5 - Dorothy Edwards, 6 - Belle Werry. Low - James Emer- ton. The 101st anniversary service of the Blackstock United Church was held on Sunday morning with the guest speaker Ron Neun who has recently returned from a two year project with the United Church of Zambia. As the guest speaker was scheduled to go to another ap- pointment Muriel Hoskin began the program by introducing Marilyn Wallace from Port Perry who gave a most interesting talk on her silk painting and dying pro- cess. She began with a brief history of the silkworm industry telling us the legend of the discovery of the silkworm fila- ment which began in China in 2500 B.C.
