a 42 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 8, 1988 The Stone Realty Peewees travelled to Oakwood on the weekend for a tournament and ended up playing 4 games, unfor- tunately they could only manage 1 victory. The boy's first game was against a very strong club from Haliburton. This was a hard fought game and if not for a se- cond period let-down we could have ended up as the winners, in- stead of losing 5-3. Scoring for Port were Chad Garvock, Jeff Card and Jeremy Norton. Brent Harper, Scott Wylie, Steve Desautels, Clay Scott, Chad Gar- vock and Aron Royle all pitched in with one assist. The teams second game was against the Oshawa Canadiens. The boys came out flying and took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Chad Garvock. After Oshawa cut the lead in half Port scored twice more with Jeff Card and Chad Kearns doing the trick. Brent Harper, Scott Wylie, Steve Desautels and Mike Sluggett each added an assist. Oshawa scored once more to make the final score 4-2. Ports third game was at 8 o'clock Sunday morning against Beaverton. It took both teams a while to get their skating legs and when they did the game turned in- to a chippy affair. With both teams having a steady parade of players to the penalty box the Port Midget B's lose game 8-5 On Sunday, October 30, the Canadian Tire Midgets travelled to Pickering. The first period of the game was fifteen minutes of fast end to end hockey. While Port Perry was unable to score with the boys firing away some good shots, the Pickering team was able to capitalize on one of their shots. As the period drew to a close Port Perry was trailing 1-0. With characteristic determina- tion the boys came on strong in the second period. After Gerry Douma made a quick pass to Paul Kett, Kett was able to score Port's first goal to tie the game. Less than two minutes later, Noel Lovering cleared the puck to Kett in the Port Perry end earn- ing himself an assist as Paul Kett scored on a wrist shot at the op- posite end of the ice to put Port ahead 2-1. Halfway through the period Pickering scored to tie the game. Both teams continued to keep up an intense pace and both goalies had to be alert as continu- ing flurries of shots continued to plague the net minders. At the 5:42 mark David Buxcey teamed up with Michael Butt to allow Butt to score Port's go ahead goal ending this period with Port Perry leading 3-2. The third period proved to be another hard fought twenty minutes. Minutes into this period, Pickering scored to tie the game. Continuing to press hard they again scored to lead the game. However at the halfway point Ed Toffen took control of the puck, flew up the wing and let fly with a quick shot to close the scoring gap. The last half of this period saw a flurry of shots from both sides. The forward line of Kett, Douma and Butt combined to put Gerry Douma in a position to score Port's last goal. In the dying minutes of the game Pickering scored a couple of quick goals to lead the game 8-5 as the curfew buzzer sounded. Port Perry matched the Picker- ing team play for play and Noel Lovering proved to be a great asset to the team by playing a very steady game between the pipes. VOFF--0ZCOO0 00rr--02CO00 -- for -- MARIPOSA TWP. special teams were of great im- portance. Unfortunately Beaver- ton proved to be stronger in this area as they won the game 3-1. Todd Smart assisted by Jeff Card was the only scoring play of the game. Because of their victory over the Canadiens the Stone gang ad- vanced to the C final against Douro. This was probably the most exciting game of the tourna- ment as the teams fought tooth and nail from the opening face off. The Novice Home Hardware Ringettes had a busy weekend, playing in a Fun Tournament in Markham on Saturday, in a League Game against Ajax on Saturday evening, and in Oshawa again on Sunday afternoon. Our first game in the Fun Tour- nament was against a team from Richmond Hill, and we are quite sure that some Port Perry residents heard our shouts as the team won their first game in a long while! Before the team's con- fidence could sag, they faced a team from Oshawa and came out the victors again. In these two games, Cindy Verschuuren was the scoring leader with several goals per game. Dana Hooker, Alechia Cracknell, Katie Senyk, and Cara vander Slagt all scored more than once, and if persistance counted, Laura Hooker and Jana Senyk would surely have added to the score. The team netted its first short-handed goal, its first power play goal, and its first shut-out with Katie as goalie. Another first was seeing Laura take her turn in net, where she capably blocked all but two of the shots she had to face. Towards the end of the second game, the girls were given a chance to round out their ex- perience by trying positions which they did not normally play. It was impressive to see Pamela Hiltz and Bonni-Jo Norton charg- ing the net aggressively as they Port got on the board first as Clay Scott scored assisted by Neil Mueller and Jeremy Norton. Douro tied the game 47 seconds later and it stayed this way until there was 2:04 left on the clock. At this time Douro scored a power play goal that proved to be the winner as the game ended with the score of 2-1. The boys played well during the weekend and deserve a lot of credit. In each of the three losses if Port could have gotten a couple took their first try at white stick, and to see Katie Senyk leave the goalie pads behind as she showed the crowd the stick-handling and skating skills she has developed while being net-minder. Michelle Branton, our most-improved player over last year, did her share of ring passing and carry- ing, and Jennifer Elliot and Shelley Lazenby showed con- tinued improvement in their first season of Ringette. In the Saturday evening game against Ajax, the girls put out an excellent effort but were not able to come out the winners. However, Ajax was only able to beat them by four points, which Pee Wee B's manage just one victory of bounces the score could quite easily have been reversed. The Stone gang has a busy week as they host Little Britain Thurs- day night at 8:00 in the exhibition game. On'Saturday they travel to the Civic Auditorium for a game at 11:00 against the Oshawa Black Hawks in another exhibition con- test and then Saturday night they host Pickering in a league game at 8:45. Come out and support this hard working group of boys. Many firsts for Novice Ringette was an improvement over the ten point spread of the previous match. Cindy Verchuuren and Laura Hooker scored the goals, while Cara vander Slagt led the rest of the team as they dug in defensively and never gave up. The team made the trip to Oshawa on Sunday afternoon with only ten of the regular players. By the end of a fast-moving, end to end game, our ten exhausted girls had scored five goals and had kept the opposition to only seven. Cindy and Alechia both each put in two, with Cara scoring one. Jennifer Elliot had a second goal of the week-end disallowed, but her effort was great. It was a week-end to remember! IF YOUR RD WAS HERE OVER 16.000 people could have read It this week!
