Taylor, 67, a bachelor and re- tired farmer, is running for Mayor of Scugog, and at the candidates meeting last week, he hauled a shovel and a broom onto the stage with him. There were loud guffaws from the audience and even the other candidates on the stage had trouble keeping a straight face. Taylor, who announced his candidacy last summer, was dressed for the meeting in tuxedo jacket with tails, grey trousers, green shirt with string tie and a pair of work boots. In his speech, he said he hopes the voters of Scugog show the same confidence in him that they did 130 years ago when his great-grandad William was elected or adi ar JEWELLERY & TANNING INC. 263 Queen St., Port Perry 985-8555 --® 7 & ~ you worked so hard to get haven't you! In response to questions from the floor on such things as recrea- tion facilities, sewage treatment plants and the future growth of Scugog, Taylor broke the audience up with a series of one-liners. "Don't worry about crossing the water until you get to the bridge," or "or don't worry about the bridge until you get to the wa- ter." Many in the audience were not sure what to make of Taylor, who is no relation to retiring Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor. But he bristled at the sugges- tion that he's not a serious candi- date. And he shouted angnly at a re- porter from an Oshawa newspaper who said his pcrformance was "outrageous." Like his appearance and his comments at the candidates meet- ing last week. Taylor's campaign to date has been un-conventional. He sometimes sports white . suspenders with "Taylor for Mayor" in black lettering. At the Port Perry Fair Labour Day Weekend, he snapped count- less Polaroid photos of exhibitors and presented them with the pho- tos. He had a run-in with organiz- ers at the Blackstock Fair when they would not allow his float . with political advertising in the And when he was asked at the candidates meeting what he would do about parking congestion in downtown Port Perry, he replied "Why not leave the cars at home and walk into town. I used to walk to church, 7 or 8 miles." Though he provided some hu- mour at last week's candidates meeting, one member of the audi- ence quipped to the Star afterwards that Taylor is in the wrong elec- tion. He should be running for the Rhino Party. Taylor's statement on why he is seeking office is re-printed in this week's edition of the paper, along with the statements of the three other candidates seeking the Mayor's office in Scugog Town- ship on November 14.
