On Thursday night, Nov. 17, conservationists in Port Perry and District proved again that they can be counted on when it comes to preserving wildlife habitat. Two hundred and twenty people had come to attend the fourth annual Port Perry and District Ducks Unlimited fun- draiser. And raise funds they did! When the evening was over $50,000 plus had been raised for wetlands conservation. This brings to over $180,000 that this group has raised over the past four years. This event was held in the Im- maculate Conception Parish Hall. While a banquet was served to participants, a combination auc- tion and raffle was conducted. A total of 55 items were put up for auction, while some 90 items were available for raffle. Some of the big ticket items in the auction were a Decorative Kestrel Carv- ing created and donated by Ron Lace of Oshawa (bringing $2500.00), a DU Canada Com- memorative Winchester Model No. 101 (at $1950.00), sponsored by Fowler and Davies of Port Perry, and a Decorative Mourning Dove Carving created and donated by John Carnwith of Oshawa ($1300.00). A mystery special raffle con- sisting of a three day fishing trip to White Water Lodge near Arm- strong Ontario, donated by John and Pat Bilenduke, plus an out- board motor donated by Port Perry Marina, a $500.00 travel voucher donated by Van Camp Construction and Thorne, Ernest & Whitney, plus miscellaneous fishing related gifts donated by Zoecon Industries, Mr. Bob McGary, Scugog Taxidermy, and SeuenTile | Jsland Resort COBI foods was won by Deanna Neal. Another special raffle was for a commemorative 30/30 rifle spon- sored by D.J. Taylor Insurance and a gun case donated by Port Perry Rod & Gun Club. This was won by Jim Courtney. All the items used in the auc- tion/raffle were either donated or sponsored by businesses and citizens from Port Perry and District. That district covers Blackstock, Caesarea, Seagrave, Uxbridge, Utica, Nestleton, Bowmanville, Courtice, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, with contributions coming_from as far away as Markham, Toronto, Armstrong, and Tulsa Oklahoma. Ducks Unlimited bags $50,000 Ken Doyle, chairman of the Ducks Unlimited committee com- mented on the effort by praising and thanking the community for the merchandise, the financial sponsorships, the time, and the ef- fort that they provided for this year's successful banquet. He added '"This is a token of our good faith towards the resources we've inherited. We have a lot more to do in the years ahead if we are going to preserve the wetlands of our country and the natural wealth that is contained there. But it is on days like this that I really believe we can do it! I know that the Ducks Unlimited Committee here in Port Perry is already beginning to plan for next year's banquet."
