PORT PERRY Daphne' s shows fashions y of top Canadian desig Daphne's, Queen Street's Victo- rian style women's boutique, kicked off the Christmas season with a "tea and scones" fashion show Wednesday November 16. Held at the Settlement House, with a classical guitarist playing gentle background music, 50 or more ladies settled into comforta- ble chairs sipping tea while watching a parade of holiday fash- ions passing by. The highlight of the show were clothes by one of Canada's top new designers, Tu Ly. The 22 year old native of Vietnam, now living in Toronto, is this year's "darling of designers" on a truly international scale. In the world of art (of which fabric design is a part of) Tu Ly is being pegged as an overnight sen- sation. A graduate of Ryerson in 1987, this unassuming young man has taken the fashion world by storm. His early inspiration was cultivated in his mother's sal- on in Ottawa. In 1976 his mother, two brothers and one sister emi- grated in Canada, and as a beauti- cian in Vietnam she ultimately entered the same profession in Canada. As a young boy, Tu Ly was ex- posed to magazines and clients - who influenced this young man's inclination for shape and design. At the Festival of Canadian Fashion last March, his works were selected for inclusion in the Woolmark Award Show. From this very auspicious showing, Tu Ly was chosen by Liberty of Lib- ertys of London to participate in its purchase and promotion of Ca- nadian fashion. He was also picked as a participant in the re- cent fashion showings for the wives of the Economic Summit Leaders. B This holiday grouping is the first showing that retaillers could choose from. Daphne Mitchell, owner of Daphnes (and co-owner of the Settlement House) saw the promise and chose. Tu Ly's work is now available at Daphne's. Models at the Wednesday show included Janice Smith, Leslie McTeague, Fran Sluggit, Sharon Wiseman, Tracy Pastic, and Jenni- fer Malcolm. } ner 5 sd, ment House Wedesday afternoon November 16, when Daphne's presented a holiday fashion show featuring designs from one of Canada's top new de- signers, Tu Ly.
