Liz Wokral, the charmingly talkative proprieter of M & W Dolls, came by her love of dolls honestly. When she was young, and her family lived in Picton, her mother ran the doll booth at the church bazaars and regularly created dolls large and small for children to en- joy. One year, Liz recalls, her moth- er became quite put out when an- other woman on the bazaar com- mittee was chosen to run a raffle, with a bride doll as the prize. Well, the Picton stores were fresh out of the dolls at the time, so this woman travelled all the way to Belleville to purchase a bride doll for the raffle. But as fate would have it, the precious toy was left in the back of the car in the sunshine, causing half the doll's face to literally melt away. The woman was horrified, natu- rally, and turned to Mrs. Wokral's mother for help. She calmed the woman down and told her she would trade a doll she owned for the melted doll. The woman was thrilled with the exchange, and happily dressed the new doll in the bridal dress. The raffle went ahead as planned. As for the melted doll, well, | Liz's ingenius mom put a patch over the melted part and dressed it the business on her own with the help of Kate, who still sews most of the dolls' clothes, and Liz's husband Peter--who came up with the idea of dollmaking in the first place. She says, "I've always enjoyed dolls," but worried about the prac- ticality of collecting the delicate things with two growing boys in the family. "Gee, but I enjoy them," she reasoned with herself. "I always have. So what if I don't have any girls to leave them to." Dolls don't come cheap (really fine collector dolls start in the thousands of dollars), so her hus- band suggested that she learn to make porcelain dolls if she was so insistant on having the precious toys around. She'd tried weaving and spin- This charming young lady Is one in a series of "barefoot" dolls by Mat- tel. The collection is one of the hottest sellers In North America. PORT PERRY 985-8435 Liz had her heart set on keeping that pirate doll, but it wasn't to be "I was so annoyed because she wouldn't let me have it!" Liz says now, sitting in the office of M & W Dolls in the Carlan Industrial Plaza on Regional Road 8, Port Perry. The office must be young Liz's dream come true. It is filled, quite literally, with dolls of every de- scription--porcelain, felt, wooden, small, large, plain, fancy. Some are imported from the world's top doll-making artisans, from coun- tries like Switzerland, Spain and Italy. Others, Liz Wokral has made herself. She's been in the doll business (making them, importing them and selling them at doll and hobby shows throughout Ontario) for the last five years. Until recently, she was in partnership with her sister, Katie Mossey (thus the name, M & W Dolls). These days, Liz runs PORT PERRY CLINIC HOGAN'S HEARING AID CENTRE of Port Perry DENNIS J. She worried about becom- ing bored with dollmaking, but her worries were groundless. "With the dolls I have never looked back. By being able to sell a few, I've been able to buy a few of the expensive ones I want." When she says "expensive", Liz isn't kidding. Her favourite doll is a porcelain and wax Cinderella, that is now worth about $5,000. "She's my pride and joy," Liz beams. Not that dolls have to be expen- sive to be well-loved in the Wok- ral household. Another cherished favourite is a sunny blonde doll in a yellow polka-dot dress she pur- chased for nine dollars. "I like it every bit as much," she insists. Liz figures her house is home to ncarly 200 dolls. Naturally she can't display them all at once, so while some are proudly out for all to see, others are stowed away in boxes waiting for the display to be rotated. The world is filled with doll col- lectors every bit as avid as Liz, and she does well at the doll shows she takes her business to. Most of her sales are done at these shows, although her outlet on Re- gional Road 8 is open to the pub- lic on Tuesdays and by appoint- ment. For an appointment to view her store, or for more information, call Liz at 85-8319. To the residents of WARD IV, | look forward to serving you for the next 3 years as your councillor.
