He also laced third in the amateur left- d open weight division. Pat Mastrangelo gave Haigh the toughest match of the day. The - two friends wrestled in the same weight category, and Mastrangelo almost managed to serve up Haigh with his only defeat. But Haigh eventually overpowered his team mate, and Mastrangelo was forced to accept fifth place. With two World Champion medals, two seconds, two thirds and a fifth (there were more than 100 armwrestlers competing, from all over the world), the team really put Port Perry on the map. Haigh said comments like "You guys are doing a heck of a job", and "Where is Port Perry?" were common, Mike Klock, a Port Perry resi- dent who isn't on the team, also managed to place sixth at the competition in amateur flyweight. Obviously, the guys were thrilled with their results at the meet, and possibly a little sur- In an interview before they left for Hollywood, John Roberts told the Star the event would be "a learning experience." But he added confidently, "Everybody has their day." Indeed, the day belonged to Port kf "Everybody has their day," Haigh echoed. "I couldn't do any- thing wrong, it seemed." "There was so much excitement, energy, in that room. I told a guy you worked off that for your matches," he added. Needless to say, when the day was over, "We went out and cele- brated good and hard!" Still, they were disappointed that a few armwrestlers they had hoped to see, didn't show up. "There was some competition there, but certainly not the tumn- out we expected. There were a lot of good armwrestlers there, but not the ones we wanted to see," Haigh said. "But it was certainly no walk in the park by any means." When the tournament was over, the five team mates rented a hot car and cruised down Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards (they didn't have time to tour Rodeo Drive). 'They also visited Universal Stu- dios (where they saw a 30' tall King Kong, the Bates Motel and Jaws), a wax museum, the Holly- wood Walk of Fame, and, of course, the ocean. "We got some strange looks down there, five guys wearing all the same shirts, with all the gang trouble they're having down there," Haigh said with a grin. With World Champion medals to their credit, what possibly could be next? Haigh says the team is presently making arrange- ments to try to make it to the In- ternational Armwrestling Champi- onships January 14 in Reno, Nev Lu i Don't be surprised if they win this one too.
