PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 by Ed Daigle It's common knowledge, in "community theatres, that male "roles are hard to fill. Female roles, conversly, create lineups. The ladies have to be good if the director is to take a second look. Maybe that is why directors pick plays with strong female roles. Lynn Sparling didn't do too bad with "---Man in the Moon Marigolds." Three of her five ac- tresses won awards that year. Maybe John Foote won't be able to duplicate Lynn's feat. If I were a realist instead of a cock- eyed optimist, I would probably say that no one will equal it. But SPECIAL Hair cut & style included. Long hair a little extra. His cast of three ladies is intelligent, energetic and hard-working. Sandy James Mitchell, the psychiatrist, is a wife, mother, teacher and has helped to run the Greenbank Children's Theatre Workshop. She is a veteran, hav- ing first gone "on the boards" at the age of nine. She directed and acted in plays all through high school. Now she uses drama to help her grade 4 class understand the 3R's. It is hard to think of Sherri Todd as shy. Acting cured that. Now she carries on like a politician as she confidently tells her listener how she would love to play Laura in '""The Glass Menagerie." I think she could do that difficult role. However, for now, she is content to use her talents to create a mid- dle aged mother superior. Halie Vogel is young, barely in- to her mid teens. But Vern's daughter is good. John has high praise for all three ladies, but he seems to be especially happy with Halie. He compares her to his brother Steve, one of the best amateur actors anywhere. This is indeed high praise. Agnes is a dif- ficult role. How does one play a saint in the 1980's? I think Halie will show us. These ladies are good ac- tresses. They know that learning lines and blocking scenes are, like costumes, make-up and lights, merely tools. The truth of their part must come from somewhere deep within. When 1 watched them rehearse, three weeks before the production dates (8th, 9th, 10th), I was amazed at the depth of characterization they had already achieved. Port Perry's Borelians are the premier play-acting group in southern On- tario. "Agnes of God' will take them a little bit further.
