(From page 16) cated in a single building just west of Raglan. Once the experi- mental stage is completed in some 18 months and large scale fish farming is started, several more buildings will be constructed for large tanks where the fish will be reared to commercial size. The fact the water will be re- circulated will also reduce the chance of the fish being contami- nated with disease from in-coming water. The idea for this hatchery us- ing this leading-edge technology came from Norm Duke, a Picker- ing businessman. He approached NRC with his idea a couple of years ago, and found that the Fisheries and Oceans Department was already working on experiments with 90 per cent water re-circulation. Mr. Duke bought the land near Raglan, paid for the building and future buildings, while NRC Spied a grant for technical de- velopment. The type of fish that may be raised include rainbow trout, Arc- tic Char, Atlantic Salmon and speckled trout. And the Hatchery will do re- search into the development of what is called a "triploid," essen- tially a sexless rainbow trout. Through gene manipulation, this "neuter" trout theoretically will grow faster and stronger be- cause all its energy will go into feeding rather than the reproduc- tive process. While Mr. Duke, his son Ter- ry, who will be working at the Hatchery, and the biologists and scientists are excited about the ex- periment for water re-cycling and the implications for large scale fish farming, Pine Valley also has plans to cater to the sport fishing enthusiast. Starting next May, a private fly fishing club will, be formed and the natural stream and ponds on thé Raglan property will be stocked with rainbow and speckled trout. Club members will be re- quired to sue barbless hooks on a catch and release basis, and there are plans to build a chalet on the This fly fishing club could de- velop into an important tourist in- dustry for the area. This barn near Raglan Is where a high tech experiment is underway by Pine Valley Hatchery Into raising fish for commerial purposes. If the experiment proves workable, new buildings will go up on the property for the raising of rain- bow trout, Atlantic Salmon and Arctic Char on a commercial scale.
