Fine effort by Novice girls The Novice Home Hardware 'Ringette team took part in their home tournament on Saturday with games against Whitby and Ajax. Although the Port team failed to win a game, all the girls played well and the scores were close. The first game against Whitby featured some good work on de- fense by Janna Senyk, Pam Hiltz, Bonni Jo Norton and Brooke Shanley. They stopped the rushes, worked hard to dig the ring free and helped Katie keep it out of the net. Jennifer Elliott scored on a fine individual effort as she charged the net and Mandy Smart scored on a nice pass from Laura Hooker. Whitby won the game by a 7- 2 margin. In game two, there was a alarge crowd on hand to sce a great effort from both sides. But it was Ajax who scored in the final min- ute to defeat the Port squad 54. Port Perry played very well throughout, and at times con- trolled the game for minutes at a time. The winning goal came off a hard shot by one of the best players on the Ajax team. Despite the loss, the Port girls made their opponents sit up MIDGET II -- BANTAM II TOURNAMENT " take notice. This was fine ef- . fort. Mandy Smart had two goals with one each by Cindy Verschur- ren and Alechia Cracknell. Dana Hooker assisted on Cindy's goal. The Novice team thanks eve- ryone connected with this tourna- ment. On Sunday afternoon, the girls travelled to Ajax for a league game, and the coaches took the opportunity to give different girls some experience at new positions. Brooke Shanley tended goal for the first time and stopped sev- eral tough shots. And it was fun to watch Janna Senyk and Pam Hiltz barrel down the ice with pure determination, charge over the red line (where they usually had to stop) and score. : Katie, without the goal pads, played fine defense, along with Alechia Cracknell. Bonni-Jo and Laura also had good games, throwing the ring out of the zone and frustrating the attackers. Port Perry lost the game, but the girls had a lot of fun and learned a great deal from the changes in positions. Cindy Vanschurren, Pam Hiltz and Clara Vander Slagt scored the goals for the Home Hardware girls.
