Last year, approximately 30,000 vehicles were stolen in this pro- vince. Detective Sergeant Bob Carpenter of the Ontario Provin- cial Police Auto Theft Squad says that a professional car thief can steal a vehicle in less than a minute by "hot wiring" it -- that is, breaking into the ignition system. But it can also be done in a less obvious way, using a tow truck. The thief pulls up, connects the desired vehicle and simply drives away. "Many people may seeit," says Carpenter, 'but no one thinks anything of it." Although 80 per cent of vehicles stolen in Ontario are recovered (since most are taken by joy- riders and later abandoned), they are often heavily damaged. The remainder are stolen by organiz- ed auto theft rings which strip cars and sell the parts. Recently Minor Scala 2--Emiel's 1 What a view for this game. Everyone should have the privi- lege of watching the game from the time keepers box. Here you have full contrdl of all the but- tons and switches plus your own nal heater. Not bad on a cold aturday moming! Anyway, Emiels put the show on the road with a goal by Ricky Olaisen with his right winger Ri- chie Tripp picking up the assist. There was much activity during the period by both teams, but nei- ther could score as they received superb goal tending from Scala's James Patterson and Emiels' Mike Pashley. Early in the second peri- od, Scala's Stephen Parish shot a beauty to go in the net, the seven eleven combo of Sean Gawley and [oN Gift Baskets of Distinction for Holiday Giving « Each basket individually created for « [deal for family, neighbours, that special someone teachers and other special friends o A variety of sizes, shapes, contents « An exuvellent corporate gift for both and prices employees and clients ¢ Order now for best selection « Delivery available HOURS OF BUSINESS -- Saturday & Monday to Thursday 10 AM to 6 PM; Friday 10 AM to 9 PM; Sunday 1PMto5 PM UEEN ST., PERRY 158 POR 985-0025 (24 hrs.) an auto theft ring was uncovered in New York which had been crating stolen cars and shipping them to other countries for resale. Auto theft will never be eliminated entirely, but Ontario Crime Prevention Week, October 30 - November 5, is a good time to develop some habits which will discourage thieves in your neighbourhood. Always lock the doors and roll up the windows tightly. "If you lock the car and take the keys with you" suggests Carpenter, ""you are at least making the car thief do a little work." A simple but effective device is the "kill switch." Install a secret location inside the car, it cuts power from the body to the igni- tion system. If possible, never leave your keys in the car when it's in a park- ing lot. If you have to, go to a lot where the attendant keeps the keys. Darryl Slack eamed the assits. As both teams played a very fierce pace the puck would not go in and it wasn't until late in the second that Stephen Parish of Scala scored his second goal with Ian Shrigley assisting. I must say the boys were really up for this one and again we saw end-to-end rushing right down to the wire, but no scoring thus the game ended Scala narrowly defeat- ing Emiel's 2-1. Big V 3-Consumers Gas 3 Big V took off in high gear and opened the scoring early in the first period on a nice goal by Blair Beveridge November 26, assisted by line mate Ryan Ridgway. ere was end to end hustle in this game and Consumers Gas evened the score late in the first on a super wrist shot by Graham Holt assisted by Jerry Blackburn When parking, turn your wheels into the curb and apply the emergency brake. This makes it harder for your vehicle to be tow- ed. Park in well lit areas with pedestrian traffic, and if possible, facing the street. Anyone tamper- ing with it is more likely to be seen. If you have a garage, use it. Lock both your vehicle and garage. When selling a vehicle, never let a stranger test drive it alone. Make a photocopy of your vehi- cle registration and keep it with your valuable papers. Write out a complete description, including the year, make, model, colour, vehicle identification number, plate number and any unusual features such as dents and scratches. Don't think it can't happen to you - think ahead and be prepared. Hockey H.L. and Andrew Pereman. Consumers Gas charged ahead in the second period and Andrew Pereman scored in the first seconds with Gerry Blackburn earning another assist. Graham Holt charged back with- - in a minute and scored another goal for Consumers to put them ahead 3-1. Andrew Pereman gained an assist. Well, I must say Big V doesn't like to take a back seat and Shawn Ball rifled one past Mike Trip who didn't have a chance wi Blair Beveridge assisting. Big V tried hard to even the score with Consumers but it wasn't until the last minute of the second period Blair Beveridge scored his second of the day to tie the game 3-3. During the third period we saw some exciting hockey but neither team could break the tie so here ended another fine game from the Pee Wee House League. AGNES OF GOD "Blindingly theatrical.' --N.Y.
