EE te ANI i Sag a ha. aa Legionnaires defeated 2-1 Saturday December 10th saw the Pee Wee Legionaires in Stouffville for a one day tourna- ment. Port won the first game, against Stouffville by a score of 3-1, but were then nipped in over- time to lose to Millbrook 2-1, in their second game. The first game, at 8:10 a.m. saw the Port Perry boys come out with a lot of energy and en- thusiasm. After a 1-1 tie at their last meeting, the Legionaires were out to prove they were the better team. Prove it they did, starting just thirty seconds into the game when Simon Traynor slid the puck past an un-prepared Stouffville goalie, assisted by Joe Broadworth. After this shock goal both teams settled in to some end to end hockey, both teams having chances, with the Port team just having the edge. Good rushes were made by Gavin Cochrane, Simon Traynor and Dave Pashley, but the team was unable to take advantage of these, and the first period ended with Port Perry leading 1-0. In the second period Port kept up the pressure, with several good chances, then Jeff Card got a pass from Gavin, and was able to put the shot away in the top corner. Corey Bricknell also got an assist on this one. With thirty seconds to go, Stouffville scored their only marker of the game. This goal was well set up, with good passes to beat the defence. Jason Kane dived to make the first save, but the rebound was flipped over him for the goal. In the final period Stouffville tried to put the pressure, but were held in check by the Port Perry defence. The final goal, an in- surance marker, was an empty net goal by Gavin, assisted by Dave Pashley and Scott Heasman, to end the game 3-1 for Port Perry. Game Two The second game saw Port up against Millbrook in a very ex- citing end to end battle, that end- ed in the thrill of sudden-death overtime. Port Perry was first to score, just one minute into the game. The shot on goal saw the Millbrook goalie dive for the puck, but it squirted free, and Jeff An- drews was able to flip it over him to score. Jason Coutoulakis got the assist. One minute later Millbrook came back to tie the score, when a shot from the face-off circle beat Rick Hutchinson on the far side. The teams continued to go end to end, with the Legionaires just lacking the "killer instinct" around the net. With less than three minutes left in regular time, it looked like Port Perry had the lead, when Jeff Andrews had a solo rush, with a shot the goalie seemed to mis-handle. It looked like a goal to the Port Perry parents, but the officials did not agree. The game was forced into over- time, for this they removed both goaltenders, still leaving five players each side. The players were only allowed to score once they were over the blue line, to add a little zip to the proceedings. Port were first to record a shot, but it was wide, then Millbrook, also missing. Affer just one minute Millbrook was given a penalty, and the Legionaires poured on the pressure, taking several good shots, hitting the post, but unable to get it in the net. The puck squirted to the blue line and out, a Millbrook player got free and was able to skate freely to the other end of the ice, putting the puck in the net, and Port Perry out of the tournament in one shot. Blue Racers nip the Knights In a very well played game in senior action, the Blue Racers came from behind to beat the White Knights by the score of 10 to 8. Scott Prechitko scored three goals for the Blue Racers, earn- ing a hit trick while Ryan Duff, Blair Prechitko and Calvin Ham- mett each responded with two goals each. Mike Tripp finished off the scoring for the Racers by getting one shot past Mike Pothier, the White Knight's goaltender. For the White Knights, Brad Lemieux was the big shooter with four goals while Kris Holland assisted with two and Sean Sauter and Jamie Heayn each connected for one goal. In Junior play, the Blue Jays broke the tie in the third period to take the lead and beat the Red Wings by the score of 8 to 5. After the first two periods, the score was tied at 1-1 with Evan Bertrand scoring for the Blue Jays and Neil McDermott connec- ting for the Red Wings. Mark Sauter and Adam Youmans shared the goaltending duties for the Blue Jays while Matthew Youmans and Kevin Duncan were in the net for the Red Wings. In the third period, the game really opened up with Mark Sauter scoring four goals for the Blue Jays while Chris Langford got two and Stephen Nagy got a single. For the Red Wings, Jason Gunn scored three goals, earning his - first hat trick of the season while Neil McDermott, second of the night, and Kevin Duncan each connected for one goal. In Intermediate action, the Red Razors beat the Green Gators by the score of 5 to 3, thanks to great goaltending by Ryan Duff who was borrowed from the seniors. For the Red Razors, Josh Dun- can and Kris Holland each scored two goals while Darryl Spicer connected for one goal. For the Green Gators, Martyn Van Ravenswaay, Jamie Sauter and Doug Short scored one goal each. This game was a good workout for the Green Gators. \---- SKATE SHARPENING Team Jackets & Uniforms Bicycle Repairs Silk Screening done on Premises SPORTS SHOP PHONE 985.2839 PH 5-2839 hme -------- aed he dd PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 13, 1988 -- areal deals!
