Both Mr. Barr and Bill Brock at Brocks Department Store on Queen Street, said the evening shopping in December was busy. 'Mr. Brock said practical and basic clothing items were popular, and he described business as being "steady" through the month of De- cember. At Settlement House on Queen Street, owner Tom Mitch- ell described the month as "very good, the best ever." ___ Two of the more popular gift ideas this year were pottery pop corn bowels and cotton afghans, he said. And he noted there did not ap- pear to be as much last minute shopping as in previous years. t Luke's Country Store on Queen Street, Carolyn Luke said 1988 was one of the best years the store has enjoyed. Jewellry boxes and simmering spice candle pots were a couple of gifts that seemed popular with shoppers this year, she said. "There seeemed to be a lot of people from out of town shopping in Port Perry. We had people in the store from Pickering and To- ronto who told us they were doing their shopping here this year." Both sporting good stores in Port Perry report an increase in sales over last year. At Sportsland on Water Street, hockey equip- ment and skates were good sellers, said a spokesman. And at Pineridge on Queen St., replica NHL sweaters and sport clothing of all kinds proved popular as gift ideas. Ken Koury, owner of Nuts About Chocolate on Quecn Street described Christmas business as "just excellent." This was the first Christmas for the store, and Mr. Koury said sales began to pick up about mid- November and continued through until Christmas. Food Baskets are available for Holiday Gift Giving. Hostess trays and large bas- kets of candy were popular, as well as cashews and pistachio nuts, traditional at this time of year. And a lot of people seemed to be buying candy as stocking stuf- fers. Chocolate false teeth were a great seller this year, he said, as were chocolate Lady Bugs. A spokesperson at Creative Basket, another new specialty shop on Queen Street, said De- cember was a very busy month. Hostess gift baskets were pop- ular and a lot of businesses were ordering gift baskets of gourmet foods and coffees to present to friends and customers. CORRECTION In last week's issue of the Port Perry Star, a story entitled "Truck driver is charged" incorrectly stated that the driver of a pick-up truck ran into a parked vehicle after col- liding with a snowmobile. In fact, it was the snowmobile that went on to hit a parked vehi- cle. The Star apologizes for any inconvenience this error may have caused.
