Prior to the start of the hock- ey season, Minor Hockey sent let- ters to parents of all players regis- tered stating that all teams, House League and OMHA would get one practise and one game per week, at least. But circumst~ ces beyond. the control of Minor Hockey have prevented this, he said. In the early fall, Minor Hock- ey had booked 150 hours of ice time at Manver Arena. However, when construction of the new Are- na in Lindsay was delayed, Lind- say Minor Hockey asked for more ice time at Manvers. The result was that .instead of Port Perry isoms getting 150 hours, it got Also, renovations over the fall to the Blackstock Arena prevented Port Perry Minor Hockey from getting the usual seven hours per week practise time in Blacktock. Mr. Steele said the Blackstock Arena is now open and Minor Hockey will start using that arena for practise time on January 12. He explained that when the Minor Hockey executive made the commitment to parents last fall of one game-one practise per week, they had no way of knowing the Manver ice would be allocated to Lindsay, or that the Blackstock Arena would not be. available until 'now. And Mr. Steele said the Minor Hockey executive will be holding .a meeting in the near future to as- sess the power skating program. Attendance at the power skat- ing over the Christmas holidays was not as good as the organiza- tion hoped for, he said. * There were 55 hours of power skating this year and it cost Minor Hockey $95 jor hour to put the program on ($50 per hour for the ice and $45 per hour for the pro- fessional instruction) The executive will make a de- cision on whether power skating will be included in the registration fees next year, or whether the pro- gram should bedis-continued next season. he said. Poor pass- ing, few shots on net, and a general lack of energy were evi- dent; however, the coaches ex- pect a quick return to normal before the games next weekend. The two goals scored by our home team were put in by Alechia Cracknell with an assist from Cin- dy Verschurren, and a short- handed goal by Cara Vander Slagt assisted by Bonni-Jo Norton. This novice team took excellent \ advantage of the Power Skating - sessions offered over the Christmas break, with the majori- ty of the girls attending each of the five sessions. An improve- ment in skating skills clearly showed up, especially in the first year players. The Novice Ringettes are look- ing forward to next Saturday when they play both Markham and Scarborough in away games. . They are eager for the chance to get their game together and regain a sense of pride and satisfaction from their team play.
