28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 7, 1989 Pee Wee House League Emiels 4 - Larocque Electric 3 The pressure was on during this contest and Emiels were vic- torious over Larocque 4-3. Ricky Olaisen opened the scoring on a pass from Robbie Romano and Mike Labanovich to take on an early lead. It wasn't long before Larocque fired two to take the lead. The first was a shot by Louis Whitfield unassisted, and the se- cond by John Hall, Kevin Pearce and Brad Strickert earning the assist. The second period was all Emiels as they netted three beauties to take a commanding lead. Richie Tripp sunk one bet- ween the pipes as Matt Coyne and Steve MacDonald set it up. Mark Jansen then followed through and scored assisted by Derek Ander- son and Tim Masterson. Steve Stiles scored the third one assisted by Shannen Leslie and Adam McTaggart. Late in the period Louis Whitfield scored his second for Larocque unassisted. Mike Pashley played great in goal for Emiels as did two other team- mates Garfield LeFort and Jeff Vernon. Consumers Gas 2 - Scala Bros. 1 This was an exciting game as both teams rushed up and down the ice only to be stopped by some superb goaltending at both ends. Mike Tripp for Consumers and James Patterson for Scala. Scala Bros. opened the scoring very early in the first period and it re- mained like this until the third Arm wrestlers compete at Soo On Sunday, January 29, members of the Port Perry Arm- wrestling competed in the 14th Annual Bon Soo Armwrestling Championships held in Sault Ste. It was certainly a tough but rewarding day for Rick in his first trip to Sault Ste. Marie. Terry Barton (sponsored by Barry's Variety of rort Perry) competed a weight bracket above his usual Bantamweight and wrestled his way to a 5th place finish. . Dan Wells, along with Pat Mastrangelo (sponsored by Re/Max Apple Realty, Kingsway Limosine, Oshawa (pulled their way to 4th and 5th places respec- tively. This lightweight category was the most heavily entered of the day and saw Mark Gardiner of London defeating Lyle Flood of the Soo in the finals. Mike Haigh (sponsored by Schildt Machining Ltd.) still bat- tling with the flu, did not compete, but coached the members of the team to their successful finishes. Competitors travelled from the U.S., Quebec and all over Ontario to compete in the Bon Soo Armwrestling. The most sportsmanlike award donated by Port Perry Arm- wrestling went to Lawrence MacKenzie of Elliott Lake who finished 2nd in the Heavyweight group. The Port Perry Club will be travelling to tournaments in Brantford on the 11th, Montreal on the 18th and to the Ontario Championships in London on the 25th of February. Good luck guys! Port downed 2-1 'Friday, February 3, saw Port Perry hosting Cobourg for another playoff game, but coming away as 2-1 losers. Rick Hutchin- son was in net for this game. This was a disappointing result, as Port Perry seemed to outplay Cobourg for most of the game. The game started with some good end to end action, fast skating and hard hitting, especial- ly from the Legionaires. Jason Coutoulakis had two good chances at a goal, with just over one minute left in the first period, and the Port players really applying pressure on the Cobourg defence. The Cobourg goalie came up big to prevent him and the period ended up scoreless. Just over one minute into the second period Dave Pashley found himself in alone on a breakaway, but was unable to score on the hot netminder. Two minutes later, on a power-play, the same goalie stopped two blasts from the blue line, one from Gavin Cochrane, the other from Jeff Andrews. Just after this power-play one of the Cobourg players had a 'breakaway, and was hauled down before he got the shot away. This resulted in a disputed penalty shot, on which Cobourg scored. Less than a minute later Port Perry scored the equalizer. Simon Traynor got the puck from Rick, then fed it to Jeff Andrews, who took it all the way in for a goal. Cobourg had a goal disallowed less than a minute later, but scored just 30 seconds after that on a tic-tac-toe play that gave Port little chance for defence. This put them ahead by a 2-1 margin, which stood up as the final score. The Legionaires pulled out all the stops in the third period, especially when both teams were down to four players for a four minute stretch. Port Perry did all the attacking in this time, and on- ly good defence kept them off the scoreboard. Playoffs continue for the boys, with a game in Stouffville Monday night, then at home on Friday night, 9:00 p.m. Sports Land 985-2174 TROPHIES ENGRAVING Pins -- Medals -- Ribbons -- Many other promotional items. period. Sean Gawley scored the goal assisted by Mike Leach and Paul Zibert. Both teams played very physical and received their share of penalties. In the third period Consumers Gas scored a goal by Jason Phillips assisted by Kent Jamieson and Misty An- drews and tied the game. We saw very close checking on both sides and there were goal scoring op- portunities right down to the wire when Kent Jamieson scored for Consumers assisted by Andrew Jones to put it in the bag. Big V Drug Store 8 - Larocque Electric 6 This was another excellent hockey game and it was anybodies right down to the final buzzer. Drew Royale opened the scoring for Big V assisted by Ryan Ridgway and Russ Gas- coyne. Minutes later Ryan Ridgway scored again for Big V assisted by Chris Murdock and Sean Ball. This ended the first period. Kevin Pearce scored ear- ly in the second period for Laroc- que to put them back in conten- tion. It wasn't for long as Ryan Ridgway scored his second for Big V assisted by Billy Sandiford and Russ Gascoyne. Larocque's Mark Cosway who played a strong game tallied for their next two goals, Brad Strickert assisting on the first, Kevin Pearce and Craig Coates on the second. Big V ended the scoring for the second period on goals by Blair Beveridge assisted by Sean Ball and Ryan Ridgway his third for a hat trick assisted by Blair Prechitko and Russ Gascoyne who now had three for the game. In the third period it was a wide opened hockey game, both teams cranking it into high gear. Blair Beveridge scored again for Big V, Drew Royale assisting. Laroc- que's Craig Coates scored on a nice set up by Mark Cosway. Moments later Mark Cosway scored his hat trick for Larocque unassisted. Chad Venning drilled one between the pipes for Big V where Kyle Simms played ex- cellent stand up goaltending, Drew Royale drew the assist. In the dying stages of the period Mark Cosway for Larocque scored his fourth from Drew Royale beating Greg Rankin who had an excellent game in net for big V. One would think Larocque were going to tie the game, but it was Big V;s Billy Sandiford who put the game out of reach, Ryan Ridgway assisting. PORT PERRY WADO KAI KARATE Signs?
