The Port Perry MoJacks re- main in the thick of the race for that all-important fourth place in the Central Jr. C League standings after splitting a pair of weekend games with the Little Britain Mer- chants and Lakefield Chiefs. With 43 points, the MoJacks are one back of fourth place Little Britain, And it looks like this race is going to go right down to the fi- nal game as the MoJacks have four matches left and the Mer- chants two. Last Saturday night in Little Britain the MoJacks looked like they might breeze to an easy vic- tory as they opened a 5-1 lead by the second period. ; But the Merchants made a game of it, and the MoJacks found themselves hanging on late in the contest for an 8-7 win, And the following night in Lakefield, the first place Chiefs enjoyed' a strong second half as they doubled the MoJacks 8-4. Lakefield is the only team the MoJacks have failed to defeat so far this season. Against the Merchants on Sat- urday night, the MoJacks rolled up a 4-1 first period lead on goals by John Harman, Chris Edmond- son, Thane Ellis and Steve Foun- tain, Matt Durward replied for the Merchants, Ellis clicked for his second of e early in the middle frame to give the MoJacks what looked like a comfortable 5-1 margin. But the Merchants smooth skating captain Jerry Kea popped in a couple of quick goals, along with one by Steve Trumbull late in the period and suddenly that comfortable lead had shrunk to one goal. The teams traded goals early Tweens win 12-0 On Sunday Feb. 12, the Allen's Siding Products Tweens hosted the team from Etobicoke in our last play-off game of the season. Port was successful in defeating this team by a score of 12-0. Some of the girls played in different positions for this game and show- ed their versatility. Shannon, Lyndsay, Valerie and Amy prov- ed to be very strong on defence and. helped our goal tenders Bristol and Tracy to earn their #shut-out. Nice work girls. # On the offense the girls proved #that their : passing skills are im- * proving. Take a little longer to look for an open corner girls and you will be even more successful. The scorers of the day were: 'Amanda, with 4 goals and 3 assists; Lori, 4 goals, 1 assist; Kelly, 1 goal 2 assists; Kim, 1 goal, 4 assists; Karen 1 goal, 2 assists; Tanya, 1 goal, 3 assists; Valerie, 2 assists and Kendra and Lyndsay 1 assist each. Then Jeff Fitchett was set up for a power play marker to make it 7-5 MoJacks, and at 16:06 Steve Connors slapped home a back hand on the power play to give the MoJacks an 8-5 lead. But even that wasn't quite money in the bank as Kea scored a power play marker at 18:52, and then just nine seconds later, Steve Roberts made it 8-7 with a Mer- chant power play effort. The MoJacks managed to hold the Merchants at bay for the final 59 seconds to come away with the crucial two points. On Sunday night in Lakefield, the Chiefs continued their mastery over the MoJacks as they won 8-4 to lengthen their lead in the stand- ings. The Harman-Geer-Menzies line scored three times in the first to give Port Perry a 3-2 lead with Menzies getting two and Geer a single. But the Chiefs scored three in the second and three more in the third, while Chris Edmondson managed to reply for Port Perry. NOTEPAD: With four games to play in the regular schedule, the MolJacks pretty well have to win three to take fourth place. And the team is hurting. For- ward Troy Foster is nursing a bruised back, Len Giacalone missed the weekend games with a bad back, and captain Thane Ellis could be out for several games with a leg injury suffered Saturday night. Auempting to split the de- fense, he was "sandwiched" be- tween two Merchants and went down in a heap. He had to be helped from the ice. The MoJacks will have one fi- nal chance in regular season play to take two points from the Chiefs as Lakefield will be at the Scugog Arena this Thursday even- ing (Feb. 16) for an 8:30 faceoff. apply.) PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 14, 1989 -- 25 MolJacks in a battle for 4th spot On Saturday, the team travels to Lindsay for a "make-up" game with the Muskies, On Sunday, Fcb, 19, Junior C fans should see a good game at the Scugog Arena as the Uxbridge Bruins pay a visit, The Bruins are in a real dog- fight for the final playoff spot, and they have been playing much imporved hockey lately. It should be a good one. MoJacks end the regular schedule on Friday, Feb. 24 with a visit to the Uxbridge Arena. The surging Bowmanville Ea- 'gles appear to have a hammer-lock on second spot as they defeated Lakefield and Little Britain over the weekend. Wellington, Little Britain, Port Perry, Ajax and Trenton are all scrambling for third and fourth spots in the standings. Cobourg and Uhre are battling for the final playo ition. ¢ top four teams in the fi- nal standings get their pick of playoff opponents from the teams that finish fifth to eighth, and get home ice advantage in the opening best of seven series. ~ A sad note, Bill Spier was re- ported drowned over the weekend in a snowmobile accident near Fenelon Falls. Jr, C fans may re- call Spier several years ago when he coached the Lindsay Muskies. He played in the NHL with Bos- ton. Petites split On Saturday the Brutons' Petites played in Beaverton. Port Perry's only goal was scored by Joan Anderson, unassisted. Although the final score was 7 to 1 for Beaverton, the Port Perry team managed to hold Beaver- ton's powerful player Dawn Doucette, to just 4 goals which was considerably better than the last time our girls met this team. Unfortunately Jenny Storms was injured in the game and will miss at least one week of action. The team from Lindsay did not provide nearly as much competi- tion in Sunday's game. From the outset, Brutons' dominated the action taking an early lead and staying out front all through the game. The line of Joan Anderson, Heather Lally and Vicki Stainton led the scoring race with Joan get- ting 2 goals and 3 assists; Vicki, 1 goal and 2 assists, and Heather 1 goal and 2 assists. Other goal scorers were Brandie Harris (2), Amanda Webb (1 goal and 1 assist), Deanna Dempsey (1 assist), Leea Kinnunen (2 goals) and Jean Templeman (1 assist). Shona Moase played well in goal while Sarah Coyne played defence. : Next weekend the team will be playing in the Mariposa tournament.
