then bow out of On Wednesday evening, Pineridge Sports Atoms travelled to Cobourg to continue their best of 5 playoff series, With Cobourg leading the series with a win and a tie, this was an important game for Port. Pineridge opened the scoring with only 25 seconds gone in the 1st, when Darryl Moase scored with a low drive to the far side of the net from Todd Parry. Less than 5 minutes later Cobourg knotted the score at one from a scramble in front of the net. Difficulty in clearing the puck from our zone continued to plague Pineridge as Cobourg scored 2 unanswered goals in the second period. The third frame saw fran- tic end to end action by both teams with Port Perry having many scoring opportunities. The teams exchanged goals for a final score of 4 - 2 for Cobourg. Ports' final goal was scored by Shawn Lewerentz from Greg Thompson. _The series resumed on Friday night in Port Perry. Pineridge, their backs to the wall, were not about to roll over yet. The first - period was scoreless with both teams pressing hard. The second period opened with Kent Taylor scoring a high hard one from 20 feet out with assists going to Greg Thompson and Jason Logan. At the seven minute mark of the second frame, Darryl Moase sent a low shot into the net with assists going to Kent Taylor and Todd Parry. oo Special Mention to Darryl Holtby in Goal who was more than equal to the task when Do or die for Pee Wee B's The Stone Realty Pee Wees returned to playoff action last Wednesday night in Stouffville and came home 5-3 winners. Jeremy Norton led the way with 2 goals while Scott Wylie, Mike Sluggett and Louie Whitfield each pitched in with one goal. Neil Mueller and Clay Scott both pick- ed up 2 assists while Chad Gar- vock added one. On Friday night the boys hosted Cobourg and came out flying. Brent Harper got Port started off on the right foot with a goal 5 minutes into the game. Chad Gar- vock and Mike Sluggett picked up the assists. Unfortunately the determination Port showed 'before scoring this goal died after it was scored and Cobourg replied with 4 goals of their own to win' 41. . This loss put the boys behind the eightball as they now had to win both of their remaining playoff games to advance to the next round of playoffs. On Saturday night at home the boys played Stouffville and show- ed fire in their eyes as they were determined not to let their playoff season end on this night. The boys built up a quick 3-0 lead and then coasted to a 6-2 victory. Steve Desautels led the way with 2 goals while Brent Harper, Chad Kearns, Chad Garvock and Scott Wylie all added single. Dlaymaiing aiity showed p ability show Ss night as Mike Sluggett, Todd Smart, Steve Desautles, Chad Kearns, Scott Wylie, Brent Harper, Chad Garvock and Aron Royle all picked up one assist. The boys travel to Cobourg on Taesday night for a do or die game for both teams. The winner of this game advances to the next round of playoffs against Halibur- ton while the playoff season is over for the loser. If the boys play the way they did on Saturday against Stouffville they should be the team to-keep on going. HOGAN 230 Queen Street * NOTE NEW NUMBER * 985-4422 WED. ONLY 1105PM Cobourg pressed hard in the third period. This 2-0 shut-out proved to give a big boost to the team. Also of note is the play of Matt Hobbs lately. His tenacious checking and free wheeling skating have been inspirational to everyone. On Saturday, the team travell- ed to Ennismore to try their hand "at tournament play. This was to be their most consistant effort so far this year. Both offensive and defensive units clicked all day long. Their first game against Graf- ton turned into a one-sided affair with Pineridge winning easily 7-1. The game was close through the first period but then Port unleash- ed their awesome attack and simply blew the competition away. The second game against the Canadian Tire sponsored team from Bancroft proved to be a re-run of the opener. Once again the competition stayed close for one period and then our guys got untracked and almost filled the net. Final score 7-1 once again. Pineridge then advanced to the final for the championship. Once again they played a team from Bancroft, this time sponsored by Home Hardware. Port Perry opened the scoring early and scored four times before Bancroft responded in the third. They exchanged goals to make it 5-2 before the roof fell in on Bancroft when Pineridge Pep- pered their net, scoring 4 more times before the final buzzer sounded. Final score 9-2. Accolades to Greg Thompson who was selected M.V.P. in the championship game and to Dar- ryl Holtby who made the slickest save on a breakaway as you would ever wish to see. Scoring for Pineridge in this tournament, were Kevin Gray - 7 goals, Todd Parry and Kent Taylor - 5 each, Greg Thompson - 3, Darryl Moase - 2, and Matt Hobbs 1. The "steel curtain" defence of Shawn Lewerentz, Matt Mantel, Jeff Clarke, Jeff Jamieson, Brad Morton and Jason Cogan proved to be a sul unit, all day hea ing up dozens of opposition rush- ed, killing penalties and providing moments of strong offence as well. The foreward lines including Brad Shanley and Ryan Williams have obviously shaken the last remnants of the flu and were fir- ing on all cylinders. And what more can be said about the goaltending of Darryl Holtby and Brandon Hammond? What a stingey pair they turned out to be only allowing 4 goals in three games, - Good work guys! ! Playoff On Sunday Pineridge Sports Atoms returned to Cobourg to decide once and for all who would advance to the next round against Fenlon Falls. After some controversy with the officials the game got under- way. Both teams played cautious- ly for the first 15 minutes with many close calls at both ends. Cobourg drew first blood mid- way through the second period with two quick goals and were to take this lead into the third. The next frame was to turn somewhat "chippy" with numerous penalties called on both teams. Fans on both sides of the rink were very vocal in their support. The teams exchanged goals late in the game to give Cobourg the game 3-1 and the series. Matt Hobbs scored Port's only goal unassisted. Pineridge matched Cobourg step for step but were frustrated by a hot goaltender in the opposition end. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 14, 1969 -- 29 playoffs &y I could skate forever How's this for a skating rink for a young skater to practise a few spins and twirls. In this photo, It ap- pears as If this young skater had all of Lake Scugog to herself Sunday afternoon. Actually, there were a lot of kids and grown-ups too, out on the lake with their blades. The weather was perfect and the ice conditions for skating were pretty good (though a little bumpy In places) Bantam H.L, Swamp Auto 7 Emmerson Insurance 4 With six minutes remaining in the third period Lee Phillips pro- vided Swamp with the winning goal from a scramble in front of the Emmerson goal. In what had been a very close checking game with few whistles. With Swamp hemmed in their own zone Peter Brock deflected a blue line shot in to open the scor- ing for Emmerson in the first period. Swamp had Emmerson in their own zone when Sram Carnegie passed the puck into a scramble in front of the net, Heath Hudson was able to get a handle on the puck and bang it home. Mark Cosway closed out the scoring in the first when he picked up a rebound and tucked it behind a sprawled Swamp goalie. : In the second Lee Phillips led a three man rush with Kevin Brown picking up the rebound and scor- ing to tie the score. Swamp pull- ed ahead on a power-play goal when Herb Hatch fired home a shot from the slot. Emmerson came back to tie the score with less than a minute re- maining in the second period when Adam Dantor scored oi a pass from behind the net. Herb Hatch opened the scoring in the third on a solo effort break- ing in on the wing and firing home a shot from the face-off circle. Swamp opened up a two goal lead on the Lee Philips goal. Adam Dantor picked a nice lead pass from Vince Criscione to break in alone and score to bring Emmer- son within one goal of Swamp. Lee Phillips netted the in- surance goal when he broke in alone and let a soft shot go that fooled the Emmerson goalie. Carl Payne broke in alone and scored to close out the scoring. It would seem that Swamp Auto is going into the play-offs at the high point of their season. LOOKING FOR R PLACE TO RDUERTISE YOUR BUSINESS? LOOK HERE...
